News in brief

Try out your Olympic transport arrangements this Friday

CyclingOlympic activities are increasing and progressing well across the campuses, with the halls of residence filling up and University House receiving a temporary face-lift.

Friday 20 July will be exceptionally busy for UEL with guests arriving and the torch relay coming through Newham the following day.

We therefore strongly encourage all staff to leave cars at home on Friday and instead take the opportunity to test out Olympic transport arrangements.

To help you, more information and links have been added to the transport section of the 2012 staff FAQs, including an interactive map of cycle routes and other transport facilities around UEL. Cycle maps are also now available in both the Stratford and Docklands Olympic operations centres as well as the staff lounges.

If you’re planning to come down, please let us know by emailing o.knight@uel.ac.uk and you'll be provided with some tips and insider knowledge about the best place to stand on the day! Even if you’re not going to be on campus, you can still tweet and facebook about the torch – just use the hashtag #BestinLondon4Sport

A ‘spring’ forward for the London Universities Environmental Group AGM

Visual minutesTuesday morning saw this year’s Annual General Meeting of the London Universities Environmental Group, hosted by the Spring Project in Vauxhall. The Spring Project is a social enterprise that brings together job seekers and recruiters to provide world class training. Artists from Creative Connection listened to the LUEG discussions and created visual minutes throughout the day. Elections were held for the LUEG executive committee, at which UEL’s Energy and Environment Manager Sara Kassam was re-elected as Chair of the Carbon Reduction Sub Group.

More information about the day is available at Greenwich University’s online Sustainability Blog.

Stratford allotment during the Games

Stratford allotmentThe Grow Your Own Club at Stratford Campus will be moving to Wednesdays (12.30 – 1.30pm) during the Olympic Games. In addition, if you’d like to tend to the allotment outside of club hours, please come to RB.2.21 to collect the Grow Your Own kit bag. For further information please contact Environmental Projects Officer Emily Hamilton.

Wormery hiatus

WormeryDue to the cold and wet spell, worms are not eating as much. As such, please do not feed the worms in our wormery over the next few weeks, as this will allow them a bit of time to munch through their current supply of food. In addition, please remember that they are not huge fans of citrus fruits and can only handle a few citrus fruit peelings.  If you have any questions about the wormery or our wiggly friends please contact Environmental Projects Officer Emily Hamilton.
