16 UEL students have travelled to Seoul, South Korea for the month-long Hanyang International Summer School thanks to part-funding from UEL’s Going Global scheme. The programme is designed to help participants gain a broad perspective in areas including Korean history, culture and language, and provides attendees with the opportunity to visit sights of historical and cultural note, whilst studying classes in their own subject areas. Daniel Stevens from UEL International commented: “This visit marks a great step forward for the internationalisation of UEL and its students. This is the first time we have sent a group of this size on a summer school, and it will be an invaluable experience for the students, and further consolidates our ongoing relationship with Hanyang University”. Read more on Going Global and study abroad opportunities.

Over the last six weeks TEAM UEL have been getting active and involved in sport. Students and staff from both campuses have been taking part in the London Broncos and RFL Touch Rugby East London League. Every Tuesday night at Memorial Park in West Ham, TEAM UEL
have put on their t-shirts and dodged, ducked and dived their way to the try-line. It’s been great fun, a good way to socialise and keep active and healthy.
If there’s an event you would like TEAM UEL to support, whilst engaging more staff and students, contact Yassin Abidou from UELSports.
Our free Run England jogging group will be continuing over the summer every Thursday from 5.15– 6.15pm. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never run before as the session is aimed at all abilities. The Higher Education authority has published the ‘what, where and how’ handbook for Sustainability Education, the ‘Future Fit Framework.’ Written and compiled by Professor Stephen Sterling (Centre for Sustainable Futures, Plymouth University) the Framework is based on the experience of HEA’s Education for Sustainable Development Project in supporting the embedding of sustainability in the HE curriculum. The Framework is designed to help the newly interested academic better understand and engage with sustainability education and encourage more experienced colleagues to take this work further. If you are interested in joining UEL’s Sustainability Network please contact the Environment Team.
Circling and soaring in the sky, the swift is a well-loved summer visitor to the UK, especially in London. However, sadly they are not numerous as they once were. The RSPB are asking for people to record sightings of swifts they see over the next couple of months. As part of UEL’s Biodiversity Action Plan we are helping to encourage swifts onto campus. Don’t forget you can still take part if the Cockney Sparrow Count too until Thursday 12 July.
Hundreds of organisations including London schools, colleges and universities descended on the Baden Powell House in South Kensington for the Fairtrade London Conference. As a leading Fairtrade university, UEL’s Environment Team was invited to speak to the universities and colleges about their Fairtrade journey and how they successfully achieved Fairtrade accreditation in 2012 and reaccreditation in January 2012. Other participating organisations included Divine Chocolate, Royal College of Music and City University. To find out more about ethical and environmental activities in London, why not have a look at recently published London Green Guide.
...£36,000,000 worth of aluminium is thrown away each year in the UK? Don’t forget you can recycle your aluminium foils and cans at both Docklands and Stratford Campuses, using the split bin recycling points.
