Staff are invited to submit abstracts to ‘the production of place’, a conference and series of workshops which will take place between Saturday 15 – Tuesday 18 December. The event aims to question the challenges of global conditions in relation to the production of place; how do we decide when to protect, adjust or transform? Themes include:
• Global knowledge via local place – by capturing and communicating the characteristics of a place, can place become the means of providing better global practices?
•
Making and doing – what is the appropriate relationship between making and thinking? Can the processes of making and doing create knowledge in their own right?
•
Insecurity in and of places – how can insecurity be a positive force in the negotiation of places?

Want to try triathlon?
On Sunday 24 June UEL staff, students and members of UEL's Triathlon Club came together to complete the Barking and Dagenham Triathlon as TEAM UEL. Some took part as individuals and some in teams with family and friends. Staff and students included David Fribbins (sixth), David Watkins (eighth), Kevin Chambers (12th), Jessica Dickie (54th) and Jackie Leach who took part as a team. Superb effort, and well done in tough conditions!
If you are interested in taking part in future events with staff and students as TEAM UEL or want TEAM UEL to enter an event you know of, contact Yas from UELSports on y.abidou@uel.ac.uk

Environment Team, Facilities
We all know east London is a trend setter, and when it comes to resource-use UEL is leading the way. Last Friday UEL hosted the first multi-organisation WARPit workshop in London. Delegates included UK Civil Service, Goldsmiths University, WasteWatch, circus schools, theatres and many more. Daniel O’Connor, WARPit founder, introduced the concept of collaborative consumption and demonstrated how his eBay style reuse portal WARPit has saved councils and universities thousands of pounds. If your School or Service has any unwanted items such as furniture, stationery, office or lab equipment, sign up to UEL’s WARPit page today!
We have installed new Sheffield Cycle stands at Stratford and Docklands Campuses, providing 80 extra bike park spaces for staff and students. Also, look out for the shiny new silver foot pump being installed near the existing cycle racks next to the Conference and Computer Centre at Stratford. Don’t forget to sign up to use the locakable cycle shelters for free from now until Monday 10 September. If you feel a bit rusty on your bike, or would like route planning advice, contact Newham Council, who are offering free lessons and advice to anyone who lives or works in the borough.
It may be tipping it down at Wimbledon but in the lovely herb garden at the Stratford Campus there's a little bit of summer bliss. Notable visitors include a charm of goldfinches (the official name for a group of goldfinches) who have become regular visitors to the herb garden, feeding on the thistle seeds. Look out for their distinctive red and white crowns. We also have a resident fox family including a vixen and her three kits who have been spotted playing at the back of the R Building. Who says you can’t create a wildlife haven in the city!
London Wildlife Trust are currently undertaking their annual London-wide Stag Beetle Survey. If you see one of these majestic beetles, make sure to register your sighting with LTW.
