Eye spy with my little eye...

blackbirdBiodiversity on our campus is alive and well! This week we’ve spotted: seven spotted ladybirds,  a house martin, swift, great crested grebe with chicks, common gull, robin, wren, house sparrow, jackdaw, blue tit, great tit, greenfinch, solitary bumble bee, grey squirrel, magpie, carrion crow, blue tit, blackbird and lots of splendid starlings. Whew! To find out more about how we promote biodiversity on our campus, read our Biodiversity Action Plan.

Counting the cockney 'sparra'

sparrowThe cockney sparra (house sparrow) has lived alongside us for hundreds of years and was once a regular fixture in our London gardens, parks and squares. It was so beloved by Londoners that it was incorporated into cockney rhyming slang - bow and arrow. Sadly, its squabbling chirps are dimmed and there are fewer to feed in our parks. The RSPB are conducting a survey of this iconic bird between 18 June and 12 July. Get involved by counting house sparrows at UEL or at home between. Find out more information about the project email on the RSPB website.

Beetle Bump arrives

beetleWildlife charity, Buglife, The Invertebrate Conservation Trust and The University of East London (UEL) have created a new home for one of the UK’s most endangered invertebrates – the Streaked Bombardier Beetle (Brachinus sclopeta). Buglife and UEL created a mock brownfield habitat, adjacent to the SportsDock, using over 60 tonnes of bricks, chalk and rubble. The brick was kindly donated by Wienerberger Ltd and the other material was funded by London Pleasure Gardens. Thank you to all our volunteers who battled through the wind and rain to give these turquoise delights a home they truly deserve.

Did you know...

... Rio+20 - is the short name for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development  currently taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 20-22 June 2012. It is an historic opportunity to define pathways to a safer, more equitable, cleaner, greener and more prosperous world for all.
