Team USA Paralympic athlete visits UEL

Lex GilletteLex Gillette, a blind track and field athlete and one of Team USA’s leading medal hopes for this summer’s Paralympic Games, paid a special visit to Docklands Campus this week, to deliver an inspiring speech to staff and students. Read more.


UEL puts in strong showing at Olympic test event

Lumar SylvesterIn what turned out to be a memorable weekend for UEL at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Outdoor Athletics Championships, Computer Networks student, Lumar Sylvester, scooped a bronze medal for his performance in the men’s 200 metres final. Read more.


Ade Adepitan launches new wheelchair basketball team at UEL

Ade AdepitanThe charismatic TV presenter and Paralympic wheelchair basketball player, Ade Adepitan, paid a special visit to SportsDock last week to help launch a new wheelchair basketball team in Newham, and lend his support to Universities Week. Read more.


UEL’s libraries rank joint fourth in the UK

Docklands LibraryThe Times Higher Education’s recent Student Experience Survey has ranked the University of East London’s Library and Learning Services amongst some of the top university libraries in the UK. As part of the survey, students were asked to rate their university in the category of ‘good library and library opening hours’. The University of East London received a rating of 6.3, awarding its libraries with a score which was joint fourth out of all UK universities, and placing the University in joint thirteenth position.


Student finance application deadlines

Continuing students must reapply for their student finance before 29 June 2012 (for new students, the application deadline is 31 May). Students can find more information and apply at direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

Rio-London: Olympic Cities Symposium focuses on social impact of ‘mega-events’

London-RioUEL joined forces with Brazil’s University of São Paulo and Gama Filho University last month for the Rio-London: Olympic Cities symposium, the main focus of which was to explore the social impact which ‘mega-events’ such as the Olympics have on their host cities. Read more.


Participate in a research study and get a free health MOT

Staff have the opportunity to participate in a research study and receive a free health MOT. A current UEL MSc student is conducting research into the effect of exercise intensity on health. Participants will have their blood cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, body fat and aerobic fitness tested during the study. Participants must be between 18 and 35 years of age, not currently undertaking any structured exercise and free from any long standing health condition such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes. To take part email Dean Leighton. Please note this is an independent study run by a current UEL student.

Vice-Chancellor’s Lecture Series

Bloomberg Institute is partnering with UEL to offer the Bloomberg Assessment Test (BAT) free of charge to all UEL students and recent graduates. The test highlights students' strengths and weaknesses in finance, and puts them in touch with financial employers.

Dr Bike Workshop proves a success

Dr BikeAs part of the Health Matters event, UEL’s Environment Team hosted the Dr Bike Workshop in partnership with Newham Council and the London Cycling Campaign. Despite the dodgy weather, the event was a great success with over 60 staff and students visiting the stand and signing up for bicycle health checks. Thank you to everyone who came along and got involved.
