This Saturday IT Services are working with Facilities to install a new backup power supply for the Docklands Server Room. If you are planning on working this weekend please be aware that there will be no power to the East Building between 8am and 2pm on Saturday 21 April. It is recommended that you bring a mobile phone with you. In order to support this work all network services will be switched off from 10pm on Friday 20 April, and will resume after the work on the power supply has been completed. IT Services expect to have all systems back online by 9pm on Saturday.
As part of our service and commitment to students we will now be offering one free book per module to all new students (applies to students who are new to HE). We hope this will help improve student retention and achievement by providing them additional financial support and materials for their studies. If you are a module leader, don’t forget to submit your reading lists via the dedicated website by 31 May 2012.
UEL’s third annual Research and Knowledge Exchange Conference will take place at the Computer and Conference Centre, Stratford Campus, on Thursday 3 May, 8.30am – 5.30pm, with an evening drinks reception. The conference's theme will be 'UEL research 2012: innovation and impact'. The University’s entire research community can come together to learn about the exciting and innovating work that is taking place across the institution. There was an excellent response to the call for abstracts, with over 60 UEL academics speaking about their research on the day. The full programme for the conference will be launched at the end of this week on the ReDs website. To register email ReDs by 5pm on Wednesday 25 April.

Credit Control will remain in EB.2.17 on Docklands Campus, but will relocate to the East Building ground floor during the summer break. In the third and final event in the ‘Tahrir Square Meme’ series, the Royal Docks Business School will be exploring whether a new form of counter hegemony is emerging and its relationship to non-violence and political pluralism. Have the revolutions of the past year made culture relevant again? Charles Tripp, Professor of Middle Eastern politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies will be speaking. On Wednesday 23 May between 11am – 3pm, the Employability and Enterprise Team will be holding this year’s ‘Careers Event’ at East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf. The team are asking for any willing staff to get involved by offering CV checks and mock interview practice for our students. All who participate will receive briefing packs to assist them.This is a great opportunity to use your UEL volunteering hours and support the student body. Any contribution of your time will be greatly appreciated whether that be an hour or the full four hours. If you would like to support this event please email Fouzia Chowdhury.
The University's E-Factor competition reached an exciting conclusion at a recent event in East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf.
MSc Strength and Conditioning student Alex Oviawe impressed the panel of judges with his business idea for a GPS which monitors an athlete’s performance, and scooped the top prize of £6,000 funding. Read the full story.
Applications for students to develop their skills and learn from a mentor in the world of work over the summer are now open. Mentoring provides students with an insight into the world of work, an understanding of careers and an opportunity to develop key employability skills. Please encourage students to apply now by completing the application form. The closing date is 12 midnight on 22 April. Contact the Employability and Enterprise team for further details.
Newham Council are giving away free tickets to provide those who live and work in Newham with the chance to walk around the Olympic Park before the Games begin, experience the ‘2012 hours to go’ entertainment event in the Olympic Stadium, and more. Urban dance student Charlotte Dutton, along with at least twenty UEL students, has been chosen to dance in the Olympic closing ceremony this summer. Two rounds of auditions attended by thousands of hopefuls were held to find the best dancers from which Charlotte, along with a large group of UEL students, was chosen to perform at the Olympic stadium in front of the millions who'll be watching worldwide. Lecture: Peace one day

Minding the gap about BAME student attainment: some preliminary findings of BAME students' experience of higher education

UEL staff only five-a-side football tournament
It’s that time of year again when staff represent their School or Service in the UEL staff five-a-side football tournament. On Monday 30 April, the tournament will kick-off at 6pm at SportsDock's 3G five-a-side pitches. Squads must comprise of at least 5 players and no more than 8, with both men and women welcome to take part. To register your team please fill in a Campus Sport booking form and choose football from the drop-down menu. For more information contact Yassin Abidou.
UEL's Try a Sport 365 programme is offering a range of sporting activities which staff can attend for free at SportsDock on Docklands Campus (except No Strings Badminton, for which there is a £3 session fee). For further details (or to book where applicable) email Try a Sport 365.

From 19 April, Zumba classes will be held at Stratford Campus at the new UELSports studio every Thursday at 5.15pm. The studio can be found next to the Cass School of Education and Communities building. It’s only £5 for staff and you don’t need to book, just come along!

This forum will consider a range of resources, for example the Sustainable University One Stop Shop and the projects associated with the London Regional Centre of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development (London RCE).
Neil Herrington, Principal Lecturer at the Cass School of Education and Communities, and Dr Katherine Eames, the Research Officer for the Sustainability Hub at Kingston University, will be leading this session. Participants will be invited to give consideration to how these resources and the experience of other institutions can be used to develop the sustainability practice and teaching at UEL.
