News in brief

SportsDock goes global

SportsDockTeam USA representatives visited UEL last week and were given tours of Stratford and Docklands campuses as well as a sneak preview of SportsDock.  Official Team USA sponsors, Nike and Ralph Lauren, also attended and exclusively unveiled the new Team USA clothing, which will not be made public until the 2012 Games.  Word of the visit spread far and wide, with coverage reaching as far as the New York Times and Sports Illustrated.


Docklands reception building update

Docklands receptionFrom Tuesday 21 – Friday 24 February there will be no pedestrian access along the ramp between Cyprus DLR and University Square from 8am and 5pm. The staircases leading from Cyprus DLR to University Square and to the East Building car park will remain open. Wheelchair users and people with limited mobility are asked to wait at the top or bottom of the ramp to be escorted through the building site. Cyclists please access the University from the Gallions Reach roundabout.   We apologies for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your continued cooperation throughout these works. Sustainability seminar series to launch this week

Green ThingA new series of sustainability seminars is launching this week at UEL. The seminars are supported by the London Regional Centre for Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development, a network of organisations and individuals endorsed by the United Nations University. UEL is a member of the London RCE and this series will showcase the expert knowledge on sustainability present within UEL. The inaugural talk on The urban jungle:  why we need urban greenspace, presented by Richard Lindsay of the Environmental Research Group, will take place on Thursday 23 February from 4.30 – 6pm in EB.2.88.

Academic Integrity WeekIt’s ‘Academic Integrity Week’ at UEL, and a chance to highlight all aspects of academic integrity at UEL as well as the expected standards of academic practice. Support this by:

• Telling your students about the week and directing them to the Academic Integrity web pages
• Use the Academic Integrity Policy
• Remind students to take the Academic Integrity Quiz in UEL Plus
• Remind students about the Library's Info Skills learning tool.


Your views sought on a research data management policy

PolicyIf you are responsible for creating or managing research data we want to hear your views on a draft data management policy for UEL.  View the draft policy and FAQs.  The policy will go to the Research & Knowledge Exchange Committee for consideration in March, so please send your comments to your School R&KE Leader (or equivalent), or send them directly to Stephen Grace, Research Services Librarian by 29 February 2012.

 

 


Cass creates 2012 clay collectables with Christchurch children

Clay models Over 20 primary school children from Christchurch School in Ilford visited the Stratford Campus for an introduction to UEL and a special Arts Taster session this month where they were tasked with marking the 2012 London Olympic Games with clay models.  Read more.

 

 

 


UEL programme leader nominated for prestigious literary award

Lit fest Congratulations to Tessa McWatt, programme leader for MA Writing: Imaginative Practice. Tessa's latest novel, Vital Signs, has been nominated for the 2012 OCM Bocas prize for Caribbean Literature a major award for literary books by Caribbean writers. Previous winners include Earl Lovelace, Keith Jardim and Merle Collins. This is Tessa’s fifth novel, and has garnered outstanding reviews.

 


Cass School of Education and Communities wins funding bid

funding Congratulations to Andrew Ravenscroft from the Cass School of Education and Communities, who has successfully bid for £150,000.  This will be used for a partnership project to create a database which links specific arguments to information found across millions of digitised books, journals and reference works.

Campus Sport - indoor cricket tournament

Cricket clubFive 6-a-side teams of students and staff took part in an indoor cricket tournament last week, organised by Campus Sports. It was a great tournament with the 'Asian Stallions' emerging victorious in the end. This is the fourth event run by Campus Sport and has helped kick start UEL's cricket club who are going on to compete in the BUCS outdoor league starting in April. If you're interested in being a part of future Campus Sports events or the UEL Cricket Club, email UELSports.

Go Green Week is in full swing

Go Green WeekGo Green Week sees a range of environmental activities and events taking place across both campuses for all staff and students. The week has already kicked off with a Green Impact Forum and continues today with a Feel Good Food Day at Docklands. On Wednesday we're showing a free screening of The Age of Stupid at Stratford Campus, and on Friday come along to our volunteers fair where you can pick up some new vintage items for your wardrobe! Thursday sees the highlight of the week - a seminar by one of UEL's own sustainability experts. All events are free so check the schedule and get involved!
