After our record-breaking NSS results in 2011, the 2012 survey will begin on Monday 6 February. The UK-wide survey is open to final-year students and will be launched with a dedicated NSS Week, details of which will be announced in the new year. After the success of the 2011 survey, we want to hit a 60% participation rate in 2012, and build on the hard work that has seen student satisfaction rise by 9% in just two years to an all-time high of 81%. There’ll be lots more information on the NSS in January, as we aim to make it bigger and better than ever. For more information email nss@uel.ac.uk

Dr Michael Skey (LSS) has published a research monograph entitled ‘National Belonging and Everyday Life: The Significance of Nationhood in an Uncertain World’. Drawing on insights from sociology, social psychology and anthropology, Skey provides a detailed analysis of the ways in which members of the ethnic majority in England discuss their own attachments, anxieties about the future, and relations with minority groups. By analysing what is at stake for the majority, the book offers a more complete understanding of recent controversies over immigration, multiculturalism and community cohesion in Western settings, as well as a framework for theorising the significance of nationhood in the contemporary era.
