UEL and KnowledgePoint have been announced as finalists in this year’s Digital Printer Awards 2011 in the ‘Digital and the Environment’ category. The awards recognise achievement by judging on creativity, originality and innovative thinking in digital application. The nominated entry focused on the joint project for the ‘build your own prospectus’ facility, and builds on last year’s winning entry in the category for digital print. This year’s entry highlighted the reduction in environmental impact helped by the switch to a digital and variable data print solution, with the equivalent of 4,000 240-page prospectuses saved. Head of Print Services, Stephen Marlow (pictured), said, “These awards confirm our leading position in the innovative development of user-focused solutions together with our drive to reduce our environmental impact wherever we can.” The awards will take place next week in central London.

The Familiar Faces study, which is taking place in the Science Museum and has been funded by the Wellcome Trust, is a free and safe test open to anyone over the age of seven years old. The Innovation Studies team would like to hear from subject areas that would be interested in joining them to create named programmes with UCAS codes and/or would like to offer one or more of the team’s modules within their own programmes. See bit.ly/innov-summary for a summary of the programme and bit.ly/innov-prog-spec for the full programme specification. Contact Graham Thomas (g.s.thomas@uel.ac.uk) to discuss options or see individual module specifications.

East London Inter College Sports Festival a success
Sponsored by UEL’s School of Health, Sport and Bioscience and the UELSports Try a Sport 365 programme, this year’s Inter College Sports Festival was deemed a massive success. The Festival is a sports participation and volunteering initiative which sees students from nine colleges in the Olympic host boroughs compete in a series of free sporting competitions. The Festival has been granted the Inspire mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme, which recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. During six days of sport, over 400 students took part in 11 sports held at venues across London. Claire Smith, Try a Sport 365 Project Manager, said, “This year’s festival raised awareness of the courses and activities on offer to potential students. There was a huge interest in UEL from students across the competing colleges and hopefully some of these will consider UEL in the future”. For more information on the UEL Try A Sport 365 programme email Claire Smith tryasport365@uel.ac.uk

Environment Team, Facilities
We would like to issue a plea to all staff to make sure the areas of campus for which you are responsible are clean and tidy. There have been reports of white goods (fridges etc), other electrical equipment and bulky waste items littering some parts of campus. If it is in your area, please make sure it’s cleared up or properly stored. As well as keeping the campus pleasant, this is an area of legal compliance, not least in light of our upcoming environmental management system (EMS) audits for the ISO 14001 accreditation (more information on that can be found at www.uel.ac.uk/greenthing/ems.htm). Contact Mollie Miller (m.miller@uel.ac.uk) for advice on disposal of bulky or WEEE waste, or see the Recycling and Waste web pages for more info: www.uel.ac.uk/greenthing/electronic.htm
Earlier this year U EL took part in the International Student Barometer, a survey of international students’ views on learning, living and support at universities across the world. We received very positive results and of the 395 students who responded, 96% were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the eco-friendly attitude found at UEL. This puts UEL at the top of the league in this category, not only in London or in the UK, but across the 65 universities taking part world-wide. For more information on the survey findings, contact Niru in the International Office at n.williams@uel.ac.uk
…that the Environmental Research Group at UEL put together a 46-page Biodiversity Evidence Base report last year, outlining the current state of UEL’s land. It is available from www.uel.ac.uk/greenthing/wildlife.htm
