Welcome to in Focus Update… |
Past Issues << | Issue 261: 14 September 2011 |
The majority of new Staff ID cards are being issued between Monday 26 September and Wednesday 26 October 2011. As you may be aware some cards were issued prior to this to assist with the checking of the system, we have identified some small issues which we are dealing with over the next couple of weeks. If you are based at Docklands and Stratford you can collect your new ID card from the Security Reception Desks from 9am - 9pm, Monday to Friday (unless you have been advised by IT Services that you require a new photograph and then you will need to visit Reception between 9 am and 7pm, Monday to Friday). If you are based at Duncan House you will need to pick up your new card up from the Duncan House Reception from 9am - 9pm, Monday to Friday.
For more information and an FAQ’s on the New ID Cards please visit www.uel.ac.uk/facilities/icdards/access-control-system-FAQs.htm
If you are an academic and would like more information on the Student Attendance Monitoring System which is being put into place this September, an FAQ’s has been drafted on how and when students collect their card, how students use it, what it means for academics and how the system is being implemented throughout Semester A. To read the FAQ’s please visit www.uel.ac.uk/facilities/icdards/staff-FAQs.htm
If you have any questions that are not answered in either FAQ please speak to your attendance champions or to the facilities team.

The Annual Staff Planning Conference will be taking place on Friday 14 October at Stratford Town Hall, 9am – 2pm.
This year we will bring together staff from across the University to discuss this year’s theme "Student Experience" where we will focus on student satisfaction, fees, and on what UEL has to offer in terms of studying, employability and extra support in the lead up to 2012 recruitment which will be a crucial time for UEL.
Following on from our success in the National Student Survey we will be looking at what we have achieved in the past year, how far UEL has come and the work we still have to do to achieve our goals.
It will be a lively, engaging and relevant event and a great opportunity to explore discussion topics with colleagues and share ideas and recent successes. If you would like to register to attend please email your name, position and name of School or Service to strategic.planning@uel.ac.uk
UEL has recently been shortlisted for a prestigious Times Higher Education Award under the Employer Engagement strand. The shortlisted submission focussed on the work of UEL’s Employability & Enterprise Team in developing the Internship programme for what is now the Taylor Bennett Foundation. The award ceremony is due to be held on Thursday 24 November in central London. inFocus will keep you updated with any further developments, so watch this space.
'Green' Coffee? The KeepCup, a colourful reusable and travel-friendly mug, available for sale in two sizes, makes it possible. Each time you use your KeepCup in a UEL barista-served outlet, you receive a 10p discount off your hot drink. These outlets are also stocking the brand new reusable and collapsible Aquatina water bottle. The Aquatina can fit in your pocket and will not only reduce plastic waste but help you to save money too! Fill up for free at any water fountain – ten new fountains have been installed over the summer. For more details on stockists and prices visit www.uel.ac.uk/greenthing/wasteinitiatives.htm
From September 2011, reading time at the start of exams should not apply as a general rule and should only apply where the academic member of staff responsible for a particular examination deems it appropriate. If this is the case, the member of staff must inform their School Examinations Officer of this in advance to ensure the necessary arrangements are made and invigilators are briefed.
As part of our ongoing work around Academic Misconduct, the regulations for PGR Students have been amended and subsequently approved by Academic Board. These form Appendix 2 of the Academic Misconduct Regulations and can be found at www.uel.ac.uk/qa/manual/index.htm
The BAME Staff Network would like to know what Black Asian and Minority Ethnic male staff think about working at UEL. The last two staff surveys clearly indicate significant differences in perceptions and experiences of different groups working at UEL. To gain a better insight into the findings of the surveys colleagues in the Business School, in association with the BAME Staff Network, are running a number of focus groups. To complete the picture they need to hear from BAME male staff at Docklands and Stratford Campuses. To participate contact Gil Robinson at g.robinson@uel.ac.uk or Sonia Harding at s.harding@uel.ac.uk

UEL students aspire to Paralympic success
As Paralympic tickets went on sale last week, UEL staff should keep an eye on two aspiring Paralympic athletes with UEL links. Powerlifter Ali Jawad, a former UEL Sports Scholarship recipient, is one of the GB Paralympic hopefuls. Jawad, currently taking a year out from studying Sports Science at UEL, is a former Junior World Gold medallist who will be hoping to add an Olympic medal next year. New UEL Sports Scholarship student Rhiannon Jones, a current coxswain for the GB lightweight adaptive coxed four, is hoping to maintain her seat for 2012.
For more information on UEL's Sports Scholarship scheme contact Elizabeth Egan on e.egan@uel.ac.uk
On 12 and 13 September, and 14 and 15 September, UELSports is hosting its annual Sports Fair, at Docklands and Stratford Campuses respectively. Fairground rides, different sports activities to try and giant games over the four days are only some of what’s on offer during the Sports Fair.
Over 25 UELSports clubs will be represented at the Sports Fair, from basketball to dance and athletics to tennis.
The Sports Fair will also be a chance for UEL staff to register for Try a Sport 365 and Campus Sport. Campus Sport offers UEL students and staff the opportunity to enter a team to compete against other Schools, Services and Halls of Residences. Funded by Sport England, Try a Sport 365 encourages everyone to take part in the recommended 30 minutes of sport three times a week.
Make sure to come along to Sports Fair and get involved with UELSports this academic year.
For further details please contact uelsports@uel.ac.uk or visit www.uel.ac.uk/sports
