As part of UEL’s commitment to support women's entrepreneurship, the Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship recently held a Women in Business networking lunch in partnership with the London Chamber of Commerce. Around 60 guests attended last week’s event, which saw leading designer and retailer Cath Kidston (pictured) share her top tips for succeeding in business during a Q&A session with the audience. As well as remaining as the Creative Director of Cath Kidston Ltd, Cath was awarded an MBE for services to business in February 2010 as part of the Queen’s New Year Honours List. Bike Portraits, organised by UEL Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Kat Jungnickel, as part of a sociology research project on cycling cultures in the UK, is not your typical photographic exhibition. Seeking to present some of the rich and diverse cycling cultures of Hackney, east London, the exhibition will pop up for a short time across cycle stores and cafés in the area, while people looking to attend are encouraged to cycle from venue to venue. Bike Portraits is supported by the University's ‘Creative Communities Fund', a scheme which supports innovations in creative teaching, practice and research. John Smith’s Bookshops at UEL are currently in the process of ensuring that they have the correct stock in store, ready for when students return or begin their studies in September. In addition, the Bookshop will be continuing to provide each student with an individual reading list, but this can only be achieved if they receive as much information on the books recommended for each module within UEL. John Smith’s Bookshop would therefore like staff to complete a Reading List Form, and return it as soon as possible. To download the form visit bit.ly/jsreadinglist
inFocus popped down to the Children’s Garden to see how this year’s Strawberry Fair went. Children's Garden Manager Thais Bishop said: “It was wonderful to fit in this lovely event at the end of what has been, for us, a very short and busy term after the late Easter. Sadly, UEL staff and students were fewer than usual, as UEL had already finished for the summer, but our parents, visitors, and supporters, including many former pupils and parents, came along. We had craft stalls, children’s games and activities (including stunning face painting), delicious tea and cakes in the garden, and a puppet show to conclude. The winner of the raffle, and recipient of a luxury picnic hamper, was staff member Kim Atkins. Thank you to everyone who came and helped to make it a delightful occasion, and especially to those of you who so generously donated gifts, bought raffle tickets, and helped us to raise over £400 towards new equipment for our ‘outstanding’ nursery here at UEL".
Last Friday’s staff party was a roaring success with lovely food, plenty of drinks and games too. The marquee, erected outside of AVA, was packed out by both Docklands and Stratford Campus staff, and lots of fun was had by all. It was the last party for the volunteering committee, so if you’re interested in being involved in future staff events email staffparty@uel.ac.uk
