News in brief

Open Day success

UEL's Docklands CampusUEL’s Open Day was a great success on Saturday with over 500 potential students visiting the Docklands Campus and over 600 visiting the University’s Campus in Stratford. Students and their parents came along to the University to find out more about the wide range of exciting undergraduate and postgraduate courses on offer next year. They were able to chat to representatives from all of the University’s Schools, listen to talks on everything from student finance to electronic engineering, tour the University’s impressive facilities and really get a feel for what life on campus would be like for them with walking tours throughout the day, which included the opportunity to view the on-campus accommodation. Elaine Sedgwick, Marketing Research Officer, said, “Open Days are a great way of getting a feel for what courses you want to do and what being at university will be like. It was fantastic to see so many potential students visit both campuses and find out more about the courses we offer, talk with our academics and tour our facilities.”

CEWE event is on the money

Paula Denby speaking at the event.“Managing the cash rigorously will make the difference in determining whether or not your business survives” was the overriding message at the latest event held by UEL’s Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship (CEWE). The event, one of a series being run by the Centre, was hosted by businesswoman and former London Docklands Development Corporation Director, Sunny Crouch, OBE. The film, which explores the modern-day threat posed by nuclear weapons and calls for worldwide nuclear disarmament, had its first official screening in the UK and Republic of Ireland last Tuesday, at BAFTA's headquarters in Piccadilly. It was followed by a panel discussion with the Rt Hon Margaret Beckett MP, former CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson, Queen Noor of Jordan, and former 'minuteman' Bruce Blair, who had the job of launching US nukes in under 60 seconds. Anna, who graduated with a distinction in Media Studies and French from UEL, is committed to distributing socially and ethically responsible films. 60-second interview

For this third instalment, we had a chat with Project Manager Daniel Stevens to find out more about the Going Global from Home project

What was your challenge?
UEL has plenty of students from outside the UK, but our own home students have traditionally been less mobile and therefore miss out on the benefits that studying overseas brings. We are using Global Reach to build on recent years’ work to encourage our home students to explore other countries and cultures.

UEL students with England Women’s Football Team from a recent Going Global trip to La Manga, SpainWhat did you achieve?
We launched the Going Global Bursary for 2010/11, which part-funds domestic students to take short study, research or work experience visits overseas, and approved funding for over 100 students. We also improved our options to study abroad for a whole semester or year, by reviewing our partnerships and internal systems.

What does everyone need to know?
All students who are performing well are entitled to apply to take part of their studies overseas. We need to ensure students are aware of the opportunities from their first contact with us, and to make it the norm to spend a part of their UEL degree abroad.

What next?
We are now accepting students’ applications for trips abroad in 2011/12 until November, and advise those who want to travel before January 2012 to apply immediately.  We want even more to take up this opportunity, and for them to conceive some really imaginative trips to all corners of the globe. We also have around 80 students signed-up to our various study abroad semester/year schemes for 2011/12, and anticipate more in time for February. For further details see uel.ac.uk/goingglobal
