60 second interview

Helen Ellis is the Project Manager for the Social Learning Space Development project. We have interviewed her to find out how the Student Experience Programme Board has been put into action:

What was your challenge?
To develop social learning space for students within the current space available on campus.

What did you achieve?
The Dome at Stratford CampusThe Dome – This social learning space on the ground floor of University House is operated by the SU. It was redecorated during summer 2010 and re-launched in Semester B following the installation of six new internet computers. It is open from 9.15am to 4.45pm, Monday to Friday. Over summer 2011, a new chair lift will be installed to improve disabled access to The Dome and additional furniture is being purchased to increase capacity and make the area more comfortable.

Aqua East – Four new internet computers have already been installed along with a plasma screen into which students can plug their laptop and other mobile devices. Additional soft furniture has been ordered to enhance capacity and make the area more comfortable. Aqua East is open from 11am to 11pm, Monday to Friday during term time.

What next?
The former bookshop on the ground floor of University House, opposite the University Coffee Shop, is being refurbished over summer 2011 to create a whole new area of social learning space for the start of the 2011/12 academic year. This will include six internet computers, new furniture and additional vending machines that can be used when the Café is closed.

UEL welcomes engineers of the future

Students from Fortismere School, in the London borough of HaringeyStratford Campus recently hosted the Institution of Civil Engineers’ ‘Create Sport Challenge’, which saw 50 budding young engineers from local secondary schools compete to be crowned London champions.  The national competition challenged students to plan, design and construct a model for a new sports venue. The Graduate School’s Director of Sustainability and member of the London Regional Waste Group at ICE, Darryl Newport, judged the regional final of the competition in the capacity of Sustainability Expert. Darryl commented: “The standard of entrants was exceptionally high, with many having sustainability as a key theme of their designs. It was also excellent to see so many female students taking part, which amounted to roughly 80% of the participants.” Fortismere School, Haringey, clinched the trophy (pictured).

Fish is the Dish of the Day

Sustainable Fish City logoUEL is proud to have signed the Sustainable Fish City pledge – a commitment to supply only fish from sustainable sources by 2012. This is part of a London-wide project by Sustain, the sustainable food charity, to turn our city into a world-leader in ethical fish consumption by the time we host the Olympics. It builds on the UEL catering team’s strong track record in this area – the majority of fish sold at campus food outlets is currently certified by the MSC as being caught responsibly, and we currently don’t serve anything on the MCS ‘Red List’ of endangered species. Keith Prince, Stratford Campus Catering Manager, said:  “UEL’s Catering Team is proud to promote sustainable fish among our students and staff. We’ve found that it’s easy to provide tasty, affordable meals, whilst reducing our impact on life in our oceans”. To find out more see bit.ly/fishcity

World Environment Day

World Environment Day logoWorld Environment Day was on Sunday 5 June and this year the theme was forests. Forests play multiple roles in our lives, including providing a source of livelihood, a refuge for many species and clean air for all. As a result of the growing global pollution levels forests have often come to be referred to as the ‘lungs of the earth’. This is particularly because deforestation and forest degradation account for nearly 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which forests would absorb if carefully managed.

Across UEL campuses there are 274 trees; not quite a forest but perhaps more that you’d think!

Did you know…

Lavender on Stratford Campus…that bees contribute £200million a year to the UK economy through pollination of various crops? Bee numbers in the UK have halved over the last 20 years; last year alone a fifth of bee colonies did not survive the winter. One of the things we’re doing at UEL is planting bee-friendly lavender on our campuses. Find out more by visiting bit.ly/plan_bee
