Professor Rachel Mulvey launches new graduate handbook

Rachel MulveyProfessor Rachel Mulvey, Associate Dean at the School of Psychology, launched her new book at a special signing event on Docklands Campus yesterday evening (31 May). The Brilliant Graduate Career Handbook, which was co-authored with Dr Judith Done, gives graduates the help and information they need to get started on their graduate career; an understanding of what is out there, how to make sense of it, and how to make good choices. Speaking at the unveiling of her new book on Tuesday, Professor Mulvey said, “I hope this book not only supports students, but their tutors also. It’s been great bringing together all of our collective experience and putting that into the production of this book. It was brilliant working with Judith; a real joy actually. I’m really pleased to see the book finally in print and I hope that many people will benefit from it.”

Green Impact Awards 2011

Attendees at the Green Impact AwardsUEL’s very first Green Impact Awards were held on Friday 27 May, celebrating environmental achievements by staff across UEL.  Throughout the year, teams have been taking action to ‘green’ their offices as part of a nationwide NUS scheme.  Their progress was monitored by UEL students, who were given special environmental auditor training, helping to broaden their own development. The ten participating teams were awarded prizes – in the form of organic chilli plants from OrganicLea, a food-growing co-operative in Chingford – by Pro-VC Nirmal Borkhataria, and Joanna Romanowicz from the NUS.  All food and drink at the event was local, seasonal and sustainable, including some amazing home-made raspberry and geranium fairy cakes, and cheeses from Sussex. Congratulations to Stratford Library, the Institute of Health and Human Development, the School of Health and Biosciences, the Vice-Chancellor’s Group Office, Campus Management, Thurrock Learning Shop, the International Office, PGCE (School of Education), Corporate Marketing and UEL Connect. To get involved and enter a team from your department next year, contact Sara Kassam via s.kassam@uel.ac.uk For more information visit uel.ac.uk/greenthing/champions.htm

Heist's high praise for personal prospectus

UEL’s Corporate Marketing team attended the prestigious Heist Awards for Education and Marketing in Leeds last week, having been shortlisted in the ‘Best use of innovation and creative thinking’ category. The nomination was for UEL’s online personal prospectus, which enables prospective students to tailor our prospectuses to match the information they need and then receive a personalised version delivered straight to their doorstep. Although UEL didn’t land the top prize, which went to the University of Nottingham, being shortlisted for the award in a very competitive field was a great recognition of the personal prospectus. To check out the prospectus for yourself, click on the green ‘Get a prospectus’ button on uel.ac.uk and then on the ‘Build it’ link, and follow the instructions.

Green Move Out 2011

Halls of residenceEach year, students moving out of halls discard several tonnes of waste. But many of these items are still in good condition, and could be used by others instead of going straight in the bin. This year for the first time UEL will be running a ‘Green Move Out’ in halls of residence to try and reduce the amount that is sent to landfill, and instead collect usable items to give to charity.

Lots of universities already run similar schemes, and across London in 2009 20 tonnes of unwanted goods were collected for reuse. We look forward to seeing how the UEL trial works out!

For more information visit crispej.org.uk/hallsreusescheme.htm

Did you know…

Household waste…that around 30 million tonnes of household waste is generated in the UK every year? How much of that could be reused and why are we so addicted to buying new stuff?

Check out some great short videos for some more insight at storyofstuff.com
