Today the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Joughin, has officially announced the new School structures that will come into place in September 2011. The announcement comes after an extensive consultation period with staff and students. The proposals see the creation of the new School of Arts & Digital Industries and the new School of Law & Social Sciences. To download and read more about the proposals click here www.uel.ac.uk/schoolstructures
Prof. John Joughin said, ‘‘I am confident that through working alongside students and staff at UEL through a wide ranging review we have achieved the right structures to ensure that UEL continues to provide a strong academic core. This structure seeks to enhance the student experience, research development and student employability.”
Students from the UEL Institute for Performing Arts Development (IPAD) caused tourists to stop in their tracks on Monday morning when they instigated a flash mob dance performance outside the gates of Buckingham Palace. Starting with just four dancers, the group quickly grew to over a hundred, with students emerging from all corners of the crowd, as astonished and delighted bystanders grabbed their cameras and phones to record the show. Themed on the story of Romeo and Juliet, following on from the Royal Wedding less than two weeks ago, numbers grew as the crowds gathered until dancing students filled the square in front of the Queen Victoria Memorial. The stunt also quickly made headlines across the world. For the full story, and to see the Dance: Urban Practice in action, visit bit.ly/uelflashmob

Sporting legend, Baroness Grey-Thompson, a competitor in five Paralympic Games and winner of six London Marathons, was guest of honour at the event, where she received a Lifetime Achievement award and an honorary doctorate of the university. Biological diversity is a multidimensional concept that encompasses genes, species, ecosystems and their functions. Biodiversity is in decline, and the importance of urban areas in protecting biodiversity is increasingly being recognised. With our urban campuses, UEL has an important role to play in this area. Following the publication of our biodiversity action plan, we’re now working hard to implement some of the projects. From lavender planting at Docklands to creating spaces for growing vegetables and an ‘orchard’ at Stratford, there’s plenty going on! To find out more visit uel.ac.uk/greenthing/wildlife.htm
...that UEL has it’s own rose? The William Morris rose was bred to celebrate UEL’s centenary by renowned rose breeder David Austin who has an honorary degree from the University: bit.ly/davidaustin
