BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter and hip-hop producer DJ Semtex visited UG students on UELs Music Industry Management course last week. Students were given a special insight into the 10 year career of Semtex, who spoke of the numerous artists he has worked with including Kanye West, Jay-Z and Dizzee Rascal. Blogging about the BA programme, DJ Semtex said, “It’s a pity there wasn’t a course like this when I was coming through, I would have actually attended the classes. If you have any intention of going to University and are looking at getting into the Music Business, Management, Marketing, Promotion, or anything else, you should take a serious look at signing up to the ‘Music Industry Management’ course at UEL”. Art Foundation students found fame last week when pictures of their amazing designs, made from recycled copies of the Metro newspaper, were published in the multi-million circulation newspaper. All of the dresses were made in one day each using between 15 and 20 copies of the paper. Around twenty students were involved in the project. When they discovered that the Metro was interested in their designs, a photo-shoot was quickly organised. The students involved in the shoot: dress designers Amiera Mohey, Maddie Knight and Amulet Li, stylists Bettina Nelles and Huan Yang-Williams, photographer Riccardo Raspa and models Cristelle Delaporte, Grace-Blest-Hopley and Alma Jackson-Davis all started at UEL this year. This month, UEL Direct is being released with a new, modern look that is designed to help you find information more quickly and easily. The new layout will allow you to ‘pick and mix’ the information you want displayed, enabling you to personalise your home page with your most frequently used information.
There are four projects which are currently being worked on by the Positive Reputation programme board, covering the following areas:
– Stakeholder Mapping and Analysis: this project seeks to identify and map the key stakeholders and their interactions with the University and maintain an up-to-date record of all interaction through the implementation of a suitable customer relationship management (CRM) system.
– New Alumni and Honorary Award Holder Initiative: this project seeks to investigate how UEL can increase its levels of engagement with UEL Alumni and Honorary Award Holders, and to implement these new engagement strategies.– Creative Industries: this project aims to deliver and profile a new brand and linked communications strategy to support Creative and Digital Industries, establishing a cross-School/professional support service project reference group to give support to, and have oversight of all activities.
– League Tables: the purpose of this project is to ensure that all possible measures are taken by UEL to improve league table performance. The aim is therefore to identify and deliver on other ways (besides the NSS) that league table performance may be improved.

Earlier this month third year students from the School of Health and Bioscience took time out from their studies to host a ‘Sexual Health Awareness Day’ at the University’s Stratford Campus. Taking over the CC Building ground floor on Thursday 10 March, the event (which was jointly organised by students and staff) attracted a whole host of UEL students. Stalls addressed a number of concerns from safe sex and contraception to myth-busting and the services available to young people. Public Health and Health Promotion student Ethel Maduakolam (pictured) said, “The turnout was good. Students seem committed to finding out what we are doing, as many people lack awareness about sex.” For more information contact co-organiser Calvin via c.moorley@uel.ac.uk

Match report by Chris Deacon (Sports Journalism student):
UEL Men’s 1st team were unlucky not to win their BUCS South East Conference Cup Final after a game that saw the referee discard a point from their score. Despite the loss, Head Coach Max Gvozdenovic was happy with the spirit his side had shown all year round, “The boys have worked hard this season. For a team that have achieved this much in their first full year together I think they have done themselves proud. I don’t think we had a very good last quarter, the referees had a poor game and some of the defensive mistakes let us down today but I’m sure we’ll work on that and be even better next time around.” For the full story see bit.ly/basketball_final

The “Freestylers” eventually ran out 3 – 0 winners against “Sporting Has Beens” in front of a large crowd in the final.
