UEL fashion student reaches final of London Fashion Week competition

The work of fashion student Lucy Johnson.UEL fashion student Lucy Johnson has beaten hundreds of applicants from across the UK for a chance to show her designs at London Fashion Week, as a finalist in the Fashion Awareness Direct competition. The competition, which features just fifteen fashion students' work from the thousands studying the subject across the UK, has been described by Vogue as "an undeniable springboard into the fashion industry". The final will take place at 7.30pm this evening (22 February) as part of the Vauxhall Fashion Scout series of events, held at the Freemasons Hall in Convent Garden, London. Lucy, who will get to exhibit just two pieces in the final catwalk show, is one of only two menswear designers to have made it this far. For the full story see bit.ly/uel_lfw

Outstanding Support for Business programme board

UEL's strategy Transformation for Excellence set out nine strategic objectives for 2015. The Outstanding Support for Business: economic regeneration, social change & environmental sustainability programme board is one of nine programme boards which have been set up to achieve these strategic objectives. There are six projects which have been commissioned by the board covering areas such as:

Health and wellbeing: to develop a UEL cross-disciplinary offer for health and wellbeing in respect of knowledge-exchange, while aligning the UEL research offer on health and wellbeing with knowledge-exchange activity and increasing knowledge-exchange activity and income.
Creative, digital and IT offer (CDIT): to develop a UEL cross-disciplinary offer for CDIT in respect of knowledge exchange, align the UEL research offer on CDIT with knowledge exchange activity and to increase knowledge exchange activity and income.
– Developing academic community as consultants: to widen the pool of academics able to deliver consultancy and knowledge-exchange, engage more directly with external organisations and ultimately increase income generation.
Environmental and Carbon management plan projects have become increasingly important at UEL and we have been working hard to improve our performance in these areas. From energy saving and sustainable procurement to recycling and biodiversity, there is a lot we can do to make a positive difference.
European collaboration: maximise opportunity around the European Business Network (EBN)/the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN); utilise UEL’s membership of the EBN/ EEN to develop links with partners to create collaborative opportunities and linkages with international technology businesses.
– Developing sector clusters in Knowledge Dock: to concentrate on a smaller number of industry sectors making efficient use of support resources, whilst also developing groups of businesses that match the key subject capabilities of UEL.

The wedding list of your dreams is now a reality thanks to UEL entrepreneur

UEL ‘mumpreneur’ Donna Plakhtienko.UEL ‘mumpreneur’ Donna Plakhtienko has developed an innovative, web-based wedding list for couples soon to get hitched.  Don’t Ask Don’t Get is an online service which allows users to create a wish-list of gifts, put together using any online store or even out on the high street. Furthermore, a free iPhone app allows users to add an item to their list whilst on the high street, simply by scanning the barcode onto the phone.  Donna, who has been based at the Knowledge Dock Business Centre since June 2010, said, “Most of these kinds of services are linked to a particular store or retailer, while Don’t Ask Don’t Get is completely impartial.”  For the full story see bit.ly/dont_ask

UEL mixes it up with RichMix and the Whitechapel Gallery

'Cheryl' by Anna Naylor. The Whitechapel Gallery is to curate an exhibition of UEL’s fine art students, hosted by happening east end arts centre RichMix. The work, presented by ten undergraduate fine art students, draws its influences from childhood memories, traditional folk mythology and the politics of identity. The exhibition, entitled ‘East End Blend’, will showcase the diverse media with which the artists work, ranging from traditional painting and sculpture to photography and installation art. Described by RichMix as “the product of UEL's melting pot”, the exhibition begins with a private viewing on Friday 25 February, and is open to the public thereafter until Wednesday 2 March. For more information see bit.ly/eastend_blend

'The Great Cotton Stitch Up': Thursday 3 March

A Fairtrade cotton-picker.To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, UEL is hosting a guest lecture focusing on Fairtrade cotton.  Although Fairtrade cotton has been available for some time, less than 1% of cotton fashion on the high street carries the Fairtrade mark. Fairtrade cotton guarantees a Fairtrade minimum price as well as a Fairtrade premium for investment in social development projects such as water, education and healthcare. Unfair trade rules also contribute to keeping cotton farmers trapped in poverty. More than 10 million West African people who rely on cotton for their livelihoods are not able to compete on a level playing field. Barbara Crowther, Director of Policy and Communication at the Fairtrade Foundation, will be discussing the barriers preventing the world’s poorest cotton farmers from making a living and how we can make a difference. The lecture will take place at 5.30pm in EB.G.08 (Docklands). All are welcome. For more info visit bit.ly/stitch-up or bit.ly/uelfairtrade

Academic Integrity Week: starts Monday 28 February

The aim of Academic Integrity Week 2010/11 is to draw our students’ attention to a range of resources they should use to improve their understanding of academic integrity.  In particular, we shall be promoting 'Cite Them Right', the standardised referencing system adopted last semester by Academic Board.  We know that students are often uneasy about referencing and we believe that the adoption of a single guide, for the whole of our community, will enable them to more easily develop the academic skills they need for success. We would like you to:

– tell your students that it is Academic Integrity Week
– draw our students’ attention to 'Cite Them Right',  available electronically on UEL Plus,  for hard copy loan in all UEL libraries and on sale in John Smith's bookshops
– draw our students’ attention to the Academic Integrity website at uel.ac.uk/apse/academic
– use our Academic Integrity Policy when discussing academic integrity uel.ac.uk/qa/manual/academic.htm and
– ask your students to take the academic integrity quiz on UEL Plus
