UEL students mean businessGraduates from UEL’s Royal Docks Business School celebrated their success at two official awards ceremonies staged in central London yesterday (8 November). Undergraduates were congratulated by UEL Chancellor Lord Rix at the prestigious event at the Barbican Centre in the morning, while Postgraduates attended a similar ceremony in the afternoon. Some 800 students attended the two ceremonies, which were the second and third UEL graduation awards ceremonies to have taken place in the last week. A further four ceremonies will take place at the Barbican Centre between November 16 and December 9. Honorary Doctorates were also conferred to successful figures from the world of business. Laura Tenison MBE, who runs a chain of retail outlets specialising in fashionable maternity and baby-wear, and Russian media entrepreneur Alexander Shustorovich, considered a pioneer of east-west trade following Perestroika, were conferred with Honorary Doctorates in Business Administration. Former UEL student John Charles, who battled blindness to establish a successful catering company, and Justine Roberts and Carrie Longton, joint co-founders of Mumsnet, the UK’s most successful and influential parenting website, were also conferred with Honorary Doctorates in Business Administration.

UEL interns central to successA graduate work placement scheme of which UEL was a key partner has won a prestigious award. Scheme organisers Taylor Bennett won the Social Inclusion Award at the recent Dragon Awards ceremony. The prize, awarded by the Lord Mayor of the City of London, was in recognition of a ten3-week internship programme, which gave ethnic minority UEL graduates paid training in the communications industry. UEL Director of Employability, Femi Bola, said, “After their placements, our UEL graduates’ ambitions were transformed and they are now working in an industry that they hadn’t previously considered, and an industry that they hadn’t thought would consider them. By raising employability and aspirations, there is a knock-on effect to the whole East London community." For more information on the Dragon Awards, please visit dragonawards.org.uk.
