Professor Helen Penn expands UEL's global reach by speaking in Moscow

Professor Helen Penn of the Cass School of Education has been in Moscow recently, where she was speaking at the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Education for All World Conference. Professor Penn spoke on childcare markets to an invited audience of UNESCO delegates from Ministries of Education from around the world. She shared a platform with the South African Minister for Education and the Chief Executive for an American thinktank. Her session was chaired by the vice-president of UNESCO, the Minister of Education from the Seychelles. She was also invited to attend a reception and a children's concert in the Kremlin – an eye-opening experience. "These children from state schools had achieved such a high level of musical and physical competence" she said. She was also invited to visit the new kindergartens built by Moscow City Council, each with its own swimming pool in the basement! Professor Penn's contribution to the conference will be included soon in a set of UNESCO papers from the event.

Going Global BursaryAnnouncing the new ‘Going Global Bursary’ for students

UEL is excited to announce the latest addition to its list of bursary schemes available for students. As a part of our Global Reach Strategy, UEL has developed a bursary aimed at UK students studying at full degree level that allows them to apply for funding to take overseas travel in semester B. The bursary has been set up for those who might find it too difficult to take overseas study for a whole year or semester. The Going Global Bursary is a great way to integrate an international dimension into a degree. The bursary is intended for short overseas study periods of one to several days that will contribute towards a student’s degree. For more information please visit here

Cubed SeatingFabpad at 100% Design Exhibition, London

Fabpad recently helped prominent interior designers ‘SJGuest Designs’ and ‘Print, Tuft and Fold’ to print their latest design collection which was exhibited at 100% Design in London – recognised as one of the world’s best contemporary interior design exhibitions. Print, Tuft and Fold’s cubed seating collection was positioned at the front of the entrance, which helped to create a comfy place for attendees to meet and relax. Nerys Mathias, Manager of Fabpad, said "We love seeing our printing out in the real world. It's very exciting seeing individual designers being showcased on an international stage. It is an interesting time as the consumer market seems to be more and more interested in purchasing from designer-makers, cherishing small production items made in the UK." Political Economy of Postmodernity and the Nation-State - COVER

New Book from Dr Fariba Salehi

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new book titled ‘Political Economy of Postmodernity and the Nation-State’ by Dr Fariba Salehi, our Head of Development and Alumni. The book is based on Dr Salehi’s PhD thesis and offers a typology of postmodern phenomena including postmodernism, postmodern theory, postmodern culture, and postmodernity, before focusing her research on the last of these topics. This academic monograph offers a critical examination of the objective structures and processes that constitute postmodernity as the micro-electronic phase of capitalism in a global era, and their impact on the cultural and economic boundaries of the institution of the Nation-State – as the dominant modern unit of collective identity – and a sense of national identity”.
