Colleagues will be aware of the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey, which the Higher Education Academy runs biennially, in collaboration with the UEL Graduate School. In developing PRES, the HEA has sought to share innovative best practice between participating institutions. For PRES 2009, the Graduate School issued a paper questionnaire to complement the HEA’s web-based system, which was used by a quarter of respondents, proving its worth. The HEA invited us to write up this initiative and have now published it online HERE. PRES will run again in spring 2011 and it will be interesting to see how many other institutions follow our lead.

UELSports supporting GB Handball team towards 2012UELSports are providing Strength and Conditioning support to the GB Womens and U21 mens teams in lead up to the 2012 games. Lee Ottey, one of 17 Volunteer coaches in the Stratford campus gym, has been given a contract to fulfil the role of S&C coach for the team. As many of the GB players are based across Europe, Lee will be attending several training camps throughout the year in Norway, Denmark and Slovakia.
The first of the squad training camps was hosted recently at UEL with the GB team receiving professional coaching from UELSports conditioning experts. The three day camp allowed players to gain additional speed, agility, power and strength training. UELSports made use of local facilities including The Score centre in Leyton and the Terrence Mc Millan Athletics track in Newham.
'We are extremely happy to be able to support GB Handball throughout 2010 and 2011, as the teams prepare themselves for the games. Handball is a very spectator friendly sport and will be a very new game for UK audiences to enjoy, it is fast, athletic and dramatic. The handball events during the games will be held in a purpose built venue on the Olympic park, and this will maximise its exposure to the UK. With UELSports supporting the GB team, we are building a long lasting relationship that will develop for the foreseeable future. We are also setting up a UEL Handball club at the present time' states David Cosford.
