News in brief

Spotlight on the Application and Advice Centres

Staff from the Education and Community Partnerships team are delivering an information, advice and guidance service to complement the Late Summer Recruitment hotline. Prospective students can drop in to see qualified advisers to explore their options if they have not secured the grades they need, are applying to university for the first time or after a period away from study or if they need advice about the equivalency of qualifications gained overseas.

Julie Walker, IAG Manager, says ‘we were extremely busy last week with many students dropping in and others being referred from our academic schools having not quite made the grade. We aim to help all prospective students to find the next steps towards achieving their educational goals. This may be an extended degree, New Beginnings 2 or other preparatory course or may be advice about work experience and personal statements’.  Prospective students (and current students seeking advice on postgraduate programmes) can access the service year round on both campuses and at the Barking Learning Centre and Thurrock Learning Shop. For more information please contact Julie Walker on 0208 223 7221.

This year operations at the Clearing Centre have been boosted and the process has been streamlined to ensure that clearing is straightforward and stress-free. Benjamin Ogbebor (Self-Portrait)UEL graduate selected for World’s most prestigious portrait award

UEL graduate, Benjamin Ogbebor, has been selected for the BP Portrait award; widely regarded within the art community as the most prestigious portrait award in the World. With a first prize of £25,000, the award attracts a huge variety of submissions. This year 2,177 artists from around the world submitted works for inclusion, of these just 58 were chosen. Benjamin’s selected work is a self-portrait using traditional oil on canvas, based on reference photographs that he wanted to translate into a more traditional medium. Benjamin says of his selection: “The inclusion of my artwork in 2010 BP National Portrait Award Exhibition is a huge honour. Where else but in the National Portrait Gallery should one have their self-portrait or a portrait of someone that means a lot to them be displayed". For full story, click HERE
