UEL Secures €650k Grant for European Project

UELConnect and the Rix Centre (SHSS), supported by the Strategic Development Team (ESDS), have successfully secured funding from the European Commission for two projects within the European Lifelong Learning Programme. The UELConnect project will develop and pilot a virtual campus for work-based learning focused on developing the management capabilities of businesses and their employees. The project will develop a unique solution which incorporates online flexible learning, social learning to encourage cross cultural working, employer engagement, and shared curriculum development. The project consortium includes the University of Porto, the University of Lodz, and the National College of Ireland.

The Rix Centre’s project builds on the Centre’s existing innovation in providing ‘easy read’ websites by developing and piloting a Web 2.0 portal for the European learning disability community. The portal will support users as they generate multimedia content with a focus on social inclusion, active citizenship and employability. The project consortium involves partners from Finland, Belgium, Latvia, Austria and Portugal. These projects will be the first UEL led, EU funded collaborative project and will provide a fantastic opportunity for UEL to raise its profile across Europe.

For further information about the projects please contact Tim Edmonds (t.edmonds@uel.ac.uk)

UEL Tennis Coordinator Appointed
Nuradeen Isa - newly appointed Tennis Co-ordinator

UELSports in conjunction with the Tennis Foundation have appointed a part time Tennis Coordinator. Nurudeen Isa is a high level tennis coach, and currently coaches across East London and in particular the Aldersbrook club in Wanstead. He has also formerly worked with the Nigerian Davis cup team. On a part time (12hrs/wk) 2 year fixed term contract, Nurudeen will also be starting a part time MSc Sports Psychology course. The role is focused on increasing tennis participation across the campus by staff and students, from beginners to more advanced players.

The recently formed student tennis club will benefit enormously from his input, as they have been entered into next years British University tournaments (BUCS). David Cosford, the Director of Sport stated ‘Nurudeen is a great acquisition to UELSports, and will make a significant impact on the fortunes of tennis across campus. The most important factor now is for people to come forward as soon as possible who have an interest in getting involved. I encourage staff or students to contact Nurudeen at n.isa@uel.ac.uk or ext 4739 to discuss further. Nurudeen will start a series of tennis coaching sessions, leagues and tournaments that should be attractive to any ‘budding Andy Murray’.

UELSports have been working closely with a number of National Governing Bodies of Sport, and this relationship with the Tennis Foundation is a start of how other sports might look to work closely with UEL in the future as we get ever closer to 2012 and beyond.
