Dear colleagues,
Following an extensive consultation process for the Green Paper throughout the spring, which saw an incredible 500 members of staff and students University-wide attend events and providing feedback, I am delighted to announce the publication of the definitive University Strategy 2010-2020: Transformation for Excellence.
This strategy document sets out the definitive vision for UEL for the next ten years. We have built this strategy up together across the entire institution and it is something which I hope we all identify with as being our map for our future. We now need to work through the details of the implementation for the journey of the next decade. There is no doubt that difficult times face the sector but now at UEL we have a clear sense of our priorities and of our direction of travel. I intend to maintain my consultative and inclusive approach which many of you have welcomed as we develop our detailed plans for the practical action that flows from our ambitious strategy.
It is therefore a hugely important document for us all, and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to and been involved in the consultation process that has led to its development. Everyone's feedback and comments have been very carefully considered and listened to, and have had a significant influence in the final development stages of this strategy. This has helped to ensure that this 10-year strategy is a document for all of us at UEL.
To download the University Strategy please visit www.uel.ac.uk/vcg/internal/strategy.htm or www.uel.ac.uk/strategy, if you are working off-site then please email communications@uel.ac.uk to request a PDF copy.

The AHRC "Media and the Inner World Network", a joint research project between UEL and Roehampton University, held a very successful event to a packed sell-out audience in the West End Jermyn Street Theatre which included psychoanalysts and academics and comedians who performed comedy and discussed the relationship between comedy, culture and the unconscious. The performers included comedians Tom Davis, Dan Schreiber & Michelle De Swarte with speakers Brett Kahr, Iain MacRury (UEL) and Estela Welldon.
The feedback was very positive, psychoanalyst Professor Brett Kahr said "this has been an exciting and unique event - combining humour, laughter with thought-provoking discussion and analysis". Leading Forensic psychiatrist and authorDr. Estela Welldon who chaired the event praised the work of the MIW network -saying she admired its 'creativity' and 'originality' in bringing together different voices from the world of performance and psychotherapy. The day was great fun and are very proud of ourselves for achieving a time of under an hour, especially as it was really hot."
Thank you to everyone who supported us and by doing so you have helped people to survive cancer, for those that would like to donate, its not too late. You can either visit our sponsorship page via http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/emmafisk or visit Bev this morning and give your donation in cash – we are grateful for every penny & no amount is too small. We would love to reach our target of £1000! Pictured: Emma, Cindy, Bev, Lea & Kerry

ExCel London won UEL’s Royal Docks Football Tournament this year beating last year’s winners, Newham Borough Council, by a margin of seven goals. The tournament, now in its second year, came about from a desire at UEL to run an event in which all of the various organisations that work along the Royal Docks could be involved. So far it has proved to be a real hit with teams including Newham University Hospital Trust, Newham Borough Council and ExCel taking part in a series of games held at Newham
Sports Centre and played with the kind of fierce dedication and competitiveness that would put England’s recent efforts to shame.
David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL said: “It’s all about developing good relations with our neighbours on the Dock and sport is a good mechanism to enable this. We are looking for even more teams to sign up next year, if we could get teams from Tate and Lyle, City Airport and Canary Wharf group involved that would be great”. Martin Avard from ExCel said: “This was ExCeL’s first year taking part. After losing the first game to last year’s winners Newham all of the players heads went down, but somehow we rallied and with the last round games going in our favour we won on goals scored. It was a really enjoyable and well organised event and we’re already looking forward to defending the cup next year”. A trophy was presented to ExCel London which they will hold until they come to defend their title next year.
If you wish to enter a team for the Royal Docks 5-Aside tournament next year then please contact David Cosford at d.cosford@uel.ac.uk
