News in brief

Improvement for UEL in the Green League

Thanks to a range of new environmental initiatives, UEL has moved up in the 2010 ‘Green League’ for higher education institutions compiled by People & Planet. UEL ranked in the second class for environmental performance, a significant improvement on previous years. 133 institutions were judged on environmental policy, management and performance in areas such as carbon reduction, waste recycling, energy efficiency, transport emissions and sustainable procurement. People & Planet is the largest UK student network campaigning to end world poverty, defend human rights and protect the environment. The Green League is produced as part of People & Planet's Going Greener campaign which aims to transform the environmental performance of the UK education sector. UEL has a number of exciting environmental projects underway, including participation in the Higher Education Carbon Management Programme, an extensive recycling programme, solar and wind power initiatives at the Docklands campus, and the development of outdoor green spaces to improve biodiversity.

UEL’s Energy and Environment Manager, Sara Kassam says, “UEL has implemented a wide range of environmental initiatives and we are pleased to be recognised by People & Planet for our efforts. The University is committed to continuous improvement in this area and we hope to do even better in 2011. Small steps such as turning off lights and recycling waste paper are simple ways that staff will help UEL to achieve an even better result in future.”

Achievement of teaching and support colleagues given recognition by the Higher Education Academy (HEA)

HEA Recipients Colleagues celebrated at a special presentation on Wednesday 9 June, where the Vice Chancellor awarded certificates, as well as praising those colleagues who had succeeded in becoming Fellows or Associates of the HEA. These colleagues, from Schools and various Services including Library and Learning, HR and ESDS, had successfully become Fellows and Associates of the HEA by using our UEL Professional Standards Framework, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) route. The HEA has hailed this route as both innovative and sector-leading and over the 2 years in which it has operated, 107 colleagues have taken advantage of it. Many colleagues have found the experience rewarding, not only because of the achievement of becoming a Fellow or Associate of the HEA but also because it has enabled them to reflect on their own practice in both teaching and supporting learning. Some of the feedback received has stated that the experience was “uplifting ….very encouraging…very valuable” and enabled them to feel “more confident” about their teaching practice.

Vice Chancellor Patrick McGhee said of their acheivements “I am delighted to be here, congratulations to all of you receiving certificates today, this is a really important process because your involvement will not only benefit you, your peers and colleagues, but most importantly improve the service we can provide our students”

If you are interested in applying to become a Fellow or Associate of the HEA, full information is available at: http://www.uel.ac.uk/lta/professional/framework.htmand you can contact either Jules Cassidy as the PSF Co-ordinator jules@uel.ac.uk or Dallas Davis at the PSF Servicing Officer dallas2@uel.ac.uk. 2010/11

The winner of the Childrens Garden Summer Raffle, Janice TaylorChildren's Garden Strawberry Fair is fruitful success

The Children’s Garden Strawberry Fair took place last week,, with guests enjoying delicious homemade strawberry-themed cakes in the garden tea room. There were also bric-a-brac stalls, while the children enjoyed face-painting, an opportunity to make their own strawberries and other games. Raffle tickets were sold on campus during the week to raise money for the Children’s Garden and for a chance to win a selection of raffle prizes. The lucky winner for the Children's Garden Summer Raffle was Janice Taylor, pictured here receiving her luscious, fruity prize. Children's Garden would like to thank all who supported us by buying raffle tickets and donating prizes. Thanks also to all who helped with our Strawberry Fair on Thursday 10th June, and to all who attended. We raised almost £400 towards new equipment for the children. It turned out to be a wonderful event, with outdoor games, strawberry teas, lovely stalls, and puppet shows. See you all next year!

UEL matches graduates with employers at Mega Day eventUEL Matches graduates with Employers at Mega Day event

The University of East London brought a host of prospective employers and students together on Friday at an event in central London. The event, 'Mega Day', brought students from a range of higher education institutions (HEIs) together with six key employers. In December last year, a UEL-led collaborative bid on behalf of the KnowledgeEast HEI partnership was awarded funding to provide 500 internship opportunities for unemployed graduates; Friday’s event along with a similar one earlier in the year were designed to deliver on this promise. Mark Faulkner, Employability Manager at UEL said: “Internships can prove an invaluable foot through the door for highly skilled graduates who are entering the workplace in challenging economic times, while an event like this can speed up the whole process of sending CVs to employers and then waiting to see if you get an interview”. Over half the students who attended the event left at the end of the day with paid internships agreed.

A half-day workshop in which we will discuss how to make the most of academic conferences: how to plan for attending them, what to expect when you get there, and how to follow up.  We will also look at how to design and produce an academic poster and make a poster presentation, and how to submit an abstract for a conference paper.

Presenting Your Research: Public Engagement, Wed 16 June 1.45 to 4.45, Stratford RB.1.15
A half-day workshop in two parts.  The first part will be an “open mike” spot for anyone who would like to deliver a short presentation (no more than five minutes, please) on their research and receive constructive feedback.  In the second part we will focus on what is involved in giving effective “public engagement” presentations.  Participants will work in small groups to practise explaining their research to a non-specialist audience in an engaging way.  No preparation is required for the second part – just come along ready to talk about your research.  (If you want an “open mike” spot, please be sure to mention this when you book a place.

Looking ahead

London Bikeathon, Sunday 27th June - Support UEL collegues!
Bikeathon
Once again, Team UEL is taking to the streets of London to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. We would be very pleased if you would support by donating as much as you can spare, and make our efforts even more worthwhile. UEL has been taking part in the London Bikeathon since 1998, when a small team from Catering first dusted off their saddles and got peddling. They have continued to take part, and year on year the team has grown. The current team still includes members of Catering, but has further expanded to include staff and friends from a variety of Schools and Services. This year we are hoping to go some way to matching our 2008 figure, when we smashed the £2000 mark! A stiff target, but one worth striving for. Whilst the target is sky high, the sums donated do not need to be. Every pound will help, so we need each £2 donation as much as we need the larger donations.

You can easily donate at our Just Giving page : http://www.justgiving.com/Rosalynd-Milroy

Team Members are Rohan Alexander, Del Basi, Jan Bernet, Toby Grainger, James Hiew, Colin Jones, Paul Kernaghan, Rosalynd Milroy and Kevin Pearch.

UELSports Roundup

UELSports seeks walk leaders

In conjunction with Newham Borough Council, UELSports are seeking to introduce a walking programme that enables staff and students to benefit from organised group walks at lunchtimes and early evening. Existing qualified walk leaders are asked to come forward, but also people who would be willing to gain the qualification. UELSports has access to free of charge courses, therefore there are many opportunities. David Cosford, Director of Sport, said ' walking as we all know brings great health and fitness benefits, and a regular programme from our campus' will hopefully encourage activity at lunchtimes and after work. Our programmes will utilise some of the parks and local footpaths that are easily accessible and close by'.

Please contact David on 0208223 6398 or d.cosford@uel.ac.uk to register or get more details.
