Green Paper-Transformation for Excellence – Thursday 20 May 2010

The all staff consultation on Patrick McGhee’s green paper “Transformation for Excellence” is being held on Thursday 20 May 2010 at ExCel, Capital Suites 14, 15 & 16. The event will run from 9am – 1pm.

UEL student hits the big time at Ultimate Challenge (UCMMA)

Djo Lema

Djo Lema, 23, a third year Business Information Systems and Computer Networks student has beaten one of the UK’s top cage fighters, Scott Jansen, at UCMMA 12: Never Back Down, which took place at the Troxy, Commercial Road on Saturday May 8th in front of a celebrity crowd including Dizzee Rascal.

Exam season

Examinations will be taking place in the areas below from the 24 May to the 4 June (excluding bank holiday weekend). Examinations start at 09:30 and will usually be taking place until about 17:00 although some additional needs exams can run to 19:00. Please could any activity which might be noisy or create disruption be limited to a minimum and essential activity only during this period. Many thanks for your help and cooperation in this regard. Please note examinations will also be taking place throughout Duncan House on the same dates and at the same times.

KnowledgeEast Graduate Internship Scheme

In December 2009, a UEL-led collaborative bid on behalf of the KnowledgeEast HEI partnership was awarded funding to provide internship opportunities for unemployed graduates. Over the next 9 months, 500 paid internship opportunities will be created for recent graduates in local SMEs or larger businesses. This will be a valuable first step into the workplace for graduates who are entering the workplace in a challenging economic climate.If you are in touch with or know any recent graduates, who are unemployed and who graduated in either 2008/9 or February Graduates from 2010 please inform them of the scheme, or they can sign up via the website.

UEL’s 5th Learning, Teaching & Assessment Conference will take place on Thursday 1 July, in the Computing & Conference Centre, Stratford Campus.  This one-day Conference is free and open to all UEL staff and collaborative partners. Conference registration is now OPEN.
A number of themed sessions will run during the morning and afternoon of the Conference, incorporating elements of traditional conference activity and enquiry-based learning.  Themes will be innovative practice, inclusive learning, teaching and assessment, Partnership and Collaboration (including the Student voice), professional development, technology enriched learning and teaching. The Black Middle Class: A contradiction in terms? by Dr. Nicola Rollock, Institute of Education
This paper draws on findings from  a two year ESRC funded project into the ‘Educational strategies of the Black Middle Classes’ (BMC). The project as a whole explores and analyses the educational perspectives, strategies and experiences of Black Caribbean-heritage middle class families.

This paper examines teachers' attitudes towards Gypsy and Traveller pupils in one primary and one secondary school in an inner-London borough in England, UK.

Research Updates

External Research Funding Opportunity News (supplied by the UEL Graduate School)

Wellcome Trust - (1) Research Leave Awards; (2) Short-term research leave awards for clinicians and scientists. Deadline for preliminary applications: 20 June 2010. Research Leave Awards enable university staff to be released from their teaching and administrative duties so they can undertake an uninterrupted period of full-time research. Awards are normally tenable for one to three years, and will provide the salary of a temporary lecturer, research expenses and a travel allowance. Visit here for more information on research leave. Short-term leave awards, enable clinicians or scientists to undertake a short-term period of full-time research at a centre or department with academic expertise in medical history, to learn the methods of historical scholarship and to explore the wider determinants and contexts of their own medical and scientific work. Awards normally last for three to four months and provide the salary of a locum or replacement lecturer for the duration of the award, and a set amount for travel to conferences. Cancer Research UK, Project Grant Population Research. Deadline: 25 June and 26 November 2010. These support projects addressing clinical and public health epidemiology, educational and behavioural research in areas of prevention, screening and early diagnosis and clinical trials methodologies or statistics and proposals considering secondary effects of treatment. Grants are awarded for periods of up to three years. Follow the link for more information.

European Association of Social Psychology (EASP) – (1) Postgraduate and postdoctoral travel grants; (2) Regional activity grants. Deadline: 30 June 2010. Travel grants are designed for short visits of postgraduate or postdoctoral students (who are EASP members) to departments elsewhere in the world in order to conduct new research, complete ongoing projects, or undergo training in a particular methodology or technology; participation of postgraduate or postdoctoral students in meetings, conferences or summer schools (co)sponsored by EASP. Regional activity grants are intended to promote any initiative that specifically serves EASP members from regions where access to scientific information, facilities and/or funding is scarce compared to European standards. Under this scheme, support may be granted for initiatives involving visits from either single researchers or groups. See here for information.

Communication Matters (UK), Small Grants. Deadline: 30 June 2010.
Grants enable not-for-profit projects in the UK to: increase awareness, understanding and knowledge of good practice in the field of augmentative and alternative communication; provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas between professional workers, people who use advanced audio coding and their families; promote the positive role of AAC in the empowerment of people with severe communication difficulties in society. In the past, up to £1,500 has been awarded in funding, but larger amounts will be considered. Visit the link for information.

International Olympic Committee (IOC), Postgraduate Research Grant Programme 2011. Deadline: 30 September 2010. The IOC Olympic Studies Centre (OSC) has launched the 2011 Postgraduate Research Grant Programme intended for young researchers engaged in scholarly research on the Olympic Movement, its history and ideals, and the impact of the Olympic Games on the various aspects of contemporary society and culture. The objectives of this programme are:

(1) Encourage young researchers to undertake research with a humanities or social sciences perspective on the Olympic phenomena. For the 2011 selection, the priority fields of research are among others: Elite Athletes: a Multidimensional Challenge (education, life skills, job); the Various Aspects of the Legacy of the Olympic Games. How can an Olympic City Remain “Olympic”?; governance of Sports Organisations: Future Challenges for the Olympic Movement; the Olympic Movement’s Contribution to Society: Challenges and Opportunities; the Youth Olympic Games: Positioning and Reach.
(2) Promote the written and audiovisual IOC patrimony consultation.
(3) Encourage exchanges of information and interdisciplinary and intercultural networking of young researchers.

All current postgraduate students undertaking a PhD degree and all university professors/lecturers who have completed their doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in the past five years and who currently hold an academic appointment are eligible to apply. Click here for information.
