Thurrock Learning Shop Open for Business On Monday 22 March 2010 the Thurrock Learning Shop officially opened. UEL operates the Learning Shop on behalf of a very wide range of local partners, and has a three year lease on the building at a pepper corn rent. We also receive a contribution from the East of England Development Agency to cover the cost of running events at the shop.
Although Monday was the official launch, the shop has been open three days a week since mid December of last year, and has already seen over 1,300 clients.
Selena Bolingbroke, Director of ESDS said ”As with our Learning and Advice shop in Barking, the aim is to provide local people with impartial advice and guidance about education and training opportunities. By having a location in a high street shopping area, we are able to reach people who otherwise would not be in contact with an education institution by more mainstream routes"
There is an opportunity for Business & Marketing students to work as interns through Top Boss Thurrock in association with UEL and Thurrock Learning Shop, for more information please contact partnerships@uel.ac.uk or take a look at the Top Boss website www.nexttopboss.co.uk
Please let your students know about it and email volunteer@uel.ac.uk if interested.

Podiatry Students London Marathon Success
Six final year Physiotherapy students from UEL (Martina Kehoe, Emma-Louise Dunphy, Emma Claxton, Siobhan Ryan, Lizzie McBrinn and Radley O'Sullivan) were invited to join the team of Physiotherapists volunteering their services at this year's London Marathon. It was a long but successful day and the students received excellent feedback from the head physiotherapist and the large number of runners they were able to help.

Rhys Williams, 25 from Leytonstone is in his second year studying for a BSC Honours in Anthropology. He is also the UEL main organiser for Unite Against Fascism.
Rhys said: “I’ve been involved with Unite against Fascism since the beginning of this academic year. Last November, there was a love music, hate racism gig to raise awareness of the issue. When we heard that Nick Griffin was standing for the election, we held meeting on campus in April and then took students to campaign in Barking.
“Everyone can contribute towards an anti-fascist atmosphere in the East End. It’s hectic campaigning whilst doing a degree, but it’s important to do something about it and it makes a difference to an outcome of an election as it has done in Barking. I’m pleased that there’s so much interest amongst students too. This Thursday we have another meeting at 5pm in EBG 16, it’s a report back on the election results.”
IT Services is happy to announce a new service for all UEL network users. “eduroam” is a new global initiative to help members of the academic community stay connected while visiting other academic institutions.
Currently available in over 80 universities in the UK and over 1000 globally, the service allows users to connect to other universities wireless networks using their home institution credentials. This takes the mantra of 'single sign-on' to whole new levels and heralds a new dawn for inter-university collaboration.
Users with wireless devices should be able to connect to the ‘eduroam’ network , anywhere in the world. When prompted for credentials, your username should be in the format userid@uel.ac.uk . Once your username and password are validated, you are online and can browse the web.
We recommend, where possible, that you connect to the eduroam network at UEL before trying elsewhere. Once you get a profile setup on your wireless device which works on a UEL campus that same profile should work at any participating organisation.
The service went live last week and and has already been used by visitors to UEL from Oxford, Kent, Portsmouth, Queen Mary, Goldsmiths, Essex and SOAS universities.
