News in brief

Patrick McGhee, UELVice-Chancellor Green Paper Consultation Update

Patrick McGhee, Vice-Chancellor is continuing his comprehensive consultation programme throughout the university over the coming weeks.  Last week he held special 8am breakfast Q&A sessions where he spoke to the auxiliary staff at both docklands and stratford campuses.  The ten-year vision was very well received and Patrick had some excellent questions put to him after his presentation.

The next phase of the consultation is to hold Q&A sessions with students, and then a further all staff interactive "world café" consultation event at the Excel Centre on Wed 20 May 9 - 12:30.  For those who would like to attend, please contact your Dean or Director to request a place by Wed 13 May.

You can still download the green paper "Transformation for Excellence" and view videocasts of Patrick at www.uel.ac.uk/strategy and email feedback to vcconsultation@uel.ac.uk.  There will also be an online survey available next week for all staff to feedback comments and views.

IT News

In response to student feedback that queues are too long during assignment submission periods we have:
- Increased the number of student printers across all sites to meet demand
- Introduced the ability to top-up Printing Credit Online. Our easy to use online printing payment service means students can top-up their print account and avoid the queues at the printing credit machines. To top up, students login to UEL Direct and go to the  ‘on-line payments for my printing account’ section
- Reviewed submission dates with Schools  to ensure staff are on hand to assist with printing and any other issues that arise.

For more information and advice on printing, please follow this link  http://www.uel.ac.uk/it/faqs/printer.htm

To improve communications with students and provide better information about the availability of services, we have introduced digital timetabling displays. Each computer bay and cluster now has a screen displaying the planned schedule for that day, so both students and staff now know when bays and clusters are available.

To improve security of our network, we have updated the security on UEL wireless. To access the wireless network you may need to do a one off download of three security certificates. Instructions on how to download the certificates can be found on the IT Services FAQ web pages http://www.uel.ac.uk/it/faqs/Wireless.htm

To ensure the desktop meets student and staff expectations we are upgrading to Office 2007.  This is being rolled out to each School and Service in turn from April to the end of June.  Office 2007 is a  self installation and instructions will be emailed to users nearer your roll out slot.  Student areas such as the Trading Floor and Computer Centre and classrooms will be updated by the end of July.

UELSports Roundup

UEL logoTeam UEL success at Newham Classic 10k

Team UEL at Newham 10KOver 40 runners, forming Team UEL, participated in the Newham Classic 10k on Sunday 18th. Starting and finishing at West Ham Park, the 10k course entered the Olympic park for 1.2 km, giving the runners a close up view of the Olympic stadium. Team UEL was made up of staff and students from all schools and services, with noteable performances from everyone concerned. First over the line from Team UEL (39th overall) was David Holland (Student) in a time of 39:27, closely followed by John  Fry (Staff), Rohan Alexander (Staff) and Emmanuel Umeh (Student).

Over 12 UEL physiotherapy students provided post race massage services to Team UEL runners and many additional runners from the event. Coordinated by Liz Nicholls (senior lecturer), the students performed admirably for a prolonged period of time, as the queues started to grow for some 'post race' relief of aching muscles. This event was a great lead in for the students who also provided Physiotherapy support to the London Marathon runners last Sunday.

Please see the following link for pictures during the event (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47630702@N08/sets/72157623764984665/)

Plans are underway to enter a Team UEL in this years London Triathlon, the Great London Swim and the Half Marathan Run to the Beat event. Please contact David Cosford for more details.
