Academic Integrity Week starts Monday 1 March 2010. During the week we highlight all aspects of academic integrity at UEL and draw attention to the standards of academic practice that we expect of all members of our community. Prize winning academic integrity posters and banners designed by our students, a new flyer and messages on the plasma screens will promote our policy and the academic integrity quiz which is available via the student UEL Plus Academic Integrity site.
So what can you do to support Academic Integrity Week?
- Tell your students that it is Academic Integrity Week, especially Semester B starters
- Use our policy when discussing academic integrity
- Ask your students to take the Academic Integrity Quiz
- Draw your students attention to the Academic Integrity web pages – http://www.uel.ac.uk/lta/academic/index.htm
- Familiarise yourself with the Turnitin process
- Get involved and help make sure that Academic Integrity Week is a success!
Our third telethon is now in full swing, the second part of the 2009/2010 Telethon campaign launched on Monday 8 February and will run until Sunday 7 March. Our team of 40 strong callers have already spoken to over 700 of our Alumni in a 2 week period. With 22% of those spoken to deciding to make a gift to the University!
The students are busy updating our alumni on the University’s news and development plans, and also explaining how they can support the University’s Annual Fund and become a ‘Friend of UEL’. As we are sure you already know the Annual Fund currently supports four main areas:
- Student Hardship Grants, which aims to assist students who experience severe economic hardship during the course of their studies
- Small Start-up Research Grants, which aims to support young researchers at the start of the research careers
- A new Sports and Leisure Complex at our Docklands campus, that aims to provide our students, staff and local communities with much needed sporting facilities
- A new Library at our Stratford campus: our Stratford campus has grown considerably and the current library needs to expand to remain a rich repository of knowledge for our academic schools in Stratford
With the help of our alumni these projects can come to life. It is also important to remember that there has never been a better time to give as the Government has committed to match-fund donations made to Higher Education Institutions by £200m during 2008-2011. In our case it means that for every £2 we raise, we will get an additional £1 from the Government, a 50% match-fund! So any gift of any size will actually be worth 50% more to the University.
If you would like more information on the Annual Fund or the Telethon, please contact Charlie Tyce on c.tyce@uel.ac.uk or ext. 6443.

Since the start of this academic year, UELSports has moved rapidly to expand on the number and success of our sports clubs. At the start of this academic year UEL boasted a relatively low number of clubs (4 to be precise), this has now been dramatically increased to more than 20, with more being discussed.
The current range of sports clubs are:-
Football (mens and ladies)
Rugby Union(mens and ladies)
Hockey (ladies)
Basketball (mens and ladies)
Gaelic Football (mens and ladies)
Boxing
Dance
Volleyball
Cricket
Badminton
Athletics
Swimming
Olympic weightlifting
Judo
Taekwondo
Ju Jitsu
Students are at the centre of making our clubs a success and we need a continual flow of committed and dedicated students to move the clubs forward on an annual basis. The clubs can also accomodate input from staff, therefore if you are interested in getting involved with our student sports clubs, please make contact. You could perhaps give a clubs your professional input (ie, coaching, marketing, fundraising, etc) or just to be a mentor or advisor to our student committees.
Successes
Recently our Gaelic Football mens team won their respective national title in Birmingham, and our Cricket team won the regional indoor cricket tournament held at Essex County Cricket Club. Our 2 mens football teams are at the top of their respective leagues with our mens first team scoring over 20 goals and only conceding 3. A strong athletics team will go to the upcoming BUCS Indoor athletics event, with our 'World Class' athlete Jeffrey Lawal Balagun expected to bring back gold to UEL. Other clubs have equally been successful, and we expect to honour this achievement by our students at our upcoming UELSports awards being held at West Ham Utd FC on Friday April 30th. Tickets are now on sale.
Our boxing club goes from strength to strength. Having formed a link with the West Ham Amateur Boys Club, our club boasts over 20 active members (most who are complete novices), and have high ambitions to host a boxing show on campus. Plans are being discussed to have a sparring show at Docklands campus during the Mayfest event on May 5th.
Last year UEL finished 127th in the British University sports tournament (BUCS) out of 142 teams. This year we expect to dramatically improve on this result, and year on year make gradual progress to ensure we boast the highest ranking out of all the London HEI within 5 years.
If you feel you can add value to the development and the progress of our sports clubs, please contact Katy Hollands, UELSports Development Officer on k.hollands@uel.ac.uk. We will value your time and your ideas.

The Springboard Women's Development Programme is specifically designed for and by women to help them develop ideas on aspects of their lives they wish to change, and to give them the skills to take control of their life as well as the boost in self-confidence to start to make things happen.
Here at UEL, we have successfully run this course a number of times with 90 women taking part over the past three years. In the words of one participant Springboard has "Made me take time to review achievements and set new goals and have the confidence to make these changes "
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank all 90 participants who have completed the programme and wish them all the best in aspiring to future visions, ambitions and goals. I would also like to thank all of our UEL female guest speakers, for their presentations to help inspire and encourage our participants with what they have achieved and how they have done it.

UEL's Patrick Oronsaye is holding a solo exhibition of paintings titled "Internationalism and Ethnicity" at the Barking and Dagenham Learning Centre between 7 and 21 March 2010. Patrick Oronsaye’s exhibition of paintings, is a celebration of his creative achievements. They fizz with the energy of African life. He is from the EDO tribe of Nigeria, yet his imagination and creative inspiration has been matured here at UEL, firstly as a Masters student, and now in the final year of the Professional Doctorate in Fine Art programme, graduating in June.
The inspiration for this work has been the realisation of his creative potential, through research into the meeting of art cultures, the African art culture and the multicultural dynamic of contemporary art in London.
Research into related theories of post colonialism, identity, creolisation/hybridity and globalisation are synthesised and transformed in his creative practice; traditional elements of African culture fuse with the contemporary. See www.lbbd.gov.uk/gallery for more information
