Samson Mpendo, 20, known as Cadet, is a Brit rap sensation from Holloway and is in his third year studying for a BA Honours in Cultural Studies and Business Management.
Cadet’s unique fusion rap and performance alongside MOBO award winning rapper, Chipmunk last year, earned him recognition and generated interest among two record companies. Cadet has also featured at the Roundhouse Camden’s ‘Turning Point Festival’ with artists such as UEL former student Tinchy, Kano, VV Brown and the Noisettes.
Cadet said: “It’s challenging studying at UEL and being involved in music, yet future prospects are really exciting."
Stephen Maddison, HSS lecturer said: “It’s great that UEL has such multi-talented students such as Cadet. We wish him every success in his musical career.”
Cadet’s new single ‘Realise’ has already had over five and a half thousand hits since being on You Tube since early January. It is out in early March as an independent release on behalf of Cadet Music UK.
Dr Anthony Gunter, a senior lecturer in Criminology & Criminal Justice has published his book based on an ethnographic study of young people in different East London neighbourhoods, "Growing up bad", Anthony's book, focuses on the life experiences of black, white and mixed race young people aged between thirteen and twenty-one. It explores topics including home life, schooling, ethnicity and gender. Packed with revealing interviews from young people in East London, the book is a rare insight into the lives of the youth growing up in Newham, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.
Anthony said: “The East End is an amazing place for the majority of young people. I wanted to present another side to the youth in East London, one that was different from the general media portrayal of stigmatised and marginalised young black men. Most of them are not murderers or gun touting drug dealers.
“The book highlights the East End as a creative hub for young people. East London is a real vibrant mix of people and energy, especially young people from diverse backgrounds and there’s a lot to celebrate here. It is the birth place of important contemporary musical forms such as Drum and Bass and Rave culture.”
Fiona Fairweather, Dean, School of Law, said: “This book is an excellent commentary and is the result of a deep involvement with the local community.”
A new data resource tool has just been launched. The Key Performance Indicators Register (KPIR) is a source of UEL internal data which covers four areas, students, staff, finance and research. The resource which is regularly updated, provides trend performance analysis on a variety of measures, e.g. percentage of students from low participation neighbourhoods.
The KPIR can be found at http://www.uel.ac.uk/planning/internal/download.htm and downloaded via the first link. Strategic planning would like to encourage you to have a look at the KPIR and take part in a quick survey (tab D in the register). If you have any questions or feedback please contact Nadine Winskowski n.winskowski@uel.ac.uk

Public Lecture: “From Personal Property to Speaking Subjects: Youth, Gender, and the Right to Credit in an Attention Economy.” by Theresa Senft Tuesday 9 March 5.30pm Room TBC, Docklands Campus
This talk engages with the politics of female sexual self-display over the Internet, especially focusing on teens in America and the U.K. Theresa will begin by discussing a recent U.S. law suit filed by two Indiana teens against their high school principal after he punished them for posting risqué photos in a private section of their MySpace accounts. Echoing current wisdom that there is never a guarantee of privacy on the Internet, the American Civil Liberties Union (representing the girls) has chosen to frame their activities as free-speech acts, arguing that these teens were expressing themselves to themselves in two sorts of bedrooms: their real-life one, and their online one. In this talk, Theresa frames the case in terms of her recent work on a phenomenon she calls “micro-celebrity”: a new way to perform the self that combines the visual techniques of corporate branding with the distribution technologies of the Internet. Theresa is particularly interested in how sexism and ageism converge within micro-celebrity’s overwhelming investment in the so-called ‘attention economies of the Web.’ This speech returns to a question raiseded in her book Camgirls: “Why are women continually encouraged to express themselves in media through confession, celebrity and sexual display, yet punished with conservative censure and backlash when their representation becomes ‘too much’ to handle?”
