News in brief

National Student Survey 2010

National Student Survey 2010 launched

The National Student Survey 2010 has opened and this year all final-year UEL undergraduates will receive a £5 voucher when they complete the survey online! The voucher can be used in the John Smith’s campus bookshops, the UELSU shop and in on-campus catering outlets.

The survey, which is run independently, measures student experiences on a range of issues, from teaching and academic support to learning resources and personal development. Last year 56% of our final-year students completed the survey, and we’re looking to go even better this year. In addition to banners, posters and leaflets, students will receive emails and texts about the survey, and there’ll be other activities to publicise the NSS. The vouchers will be available from libraries next week.

Students can complete the survey on any computer, at UEL or at home, by logging on to www.thestudentsurvey.com, and the survey runs until the end of April. For just five minutes of their time students will earn that £5 voucher, so please encourage any final-year students you have contact with to log on and make their opinion count!

February Start at UELFull steam ahead for February!

Our February intake is fast approaching and we already have over 700 enrolment records for students joining us in semester B with over 500 students already making use of our on-line enrolment system. Students do not need to wait until First Week to enrol and should ensure that they check their e-mail acounts for enrolment instructions so that when they come to the enrolment centre in First Week they just need to have their identity checked and a UEL student card issued.

We are also receiving hundreds of applications each week - New Year's resolutions clearly include improving attainment levels and employability by taking a UEL degree! The admissions team are working hard to process these applications with support from staff in Schools on making entry decisions so that we are able to confirm places for those applying in good time for a February start.

As ever, key services will be re-locating to the enrolment centre (located on the Trading Floor of the Royal Docks Business School at Docklands) including Admissions, Registry, Credit Control, Student Money Advice and Rights Team, the International Student Advisors and the Docklands Student Services Helpdesk Team. The centre opens on Tuesday 2 February with a dedicated session for international students and continues through the week with slots allocated to Schools as part of their induction programme for students. Wednesday and Thursday sees the centre open until 6.00pm so that we can accommodate our part-time and evening students also.

Enrolment is just a part of First Week and a host of events and activities will welcome the latest students to our community - full details can be found at www.uel.ac.uk/febstart New students will be directed towards these pages for information on their First Week timetable so Schools need to ensure that they have complete listings for all of the programmes on offer this February. These pages are being co-ordinated by Student Services so if you have any difficulties in accessing or uploading induction information please contact Mandy Estridge at M.A.Estridge@uel.ac.uk. International students should also see www.uel.ac.uk/international/orientation/Schedule.htm for details of their International Orientation programme - it begins with an airport collection service on 30 January and includes special talks and activities to guide these students through their move to the UK.

Open Evening 20 January 2010February Start Drop in Evening

Next Wednesday there will be a drop in evening running from 5.30pm - 7.30pm at the Docklands campus only. The focus of this event is to give people the opportunity to enquire and apply on the night for programmes starting in February 2010. Academic staff attendance will be critical to ensuring that we are matching applicants to the right programme, providing a good level of information about the programmes on offer and making decisions on entry for immediate action by the Admissions Team.

People wishing to book for this event can book online at www.uel.ac.uk/openday.  All bookings received before 12 noon on 19 January 2010 will be entered into our free prize draw to win £100 Amazon vouchers. For more information about the open day contact Vicky Rossiter v.rossiter@uel.ac.uk

UELSports Roundup

UEL logo'On your marks' for the Tri-a-Sport Project

UELSports have been successful in attracting funding from PlaySport London in order to deliver a range of supervised and coached swimming, cycling and running sessions, defined as the Tri-a-Sport project. The project starts next week (from 18th January) and runs weekly through to the last week of March. The sessions are applicable to staff and students, and do not distinguish on ability/competency (although participants ideally need some experience of swimming and light jogging). All sessions are free of charge, and only need a registration form completing on the first session.

Session times are:-

Swimming
Tuesday
12.30 to 1.30pm Atherton Leisure Centre - Coach Fiona Moorehead Lane
7.30 to 8.30pm Newham Leisure Centre - Coach Keith Chandler

Wednesday
12.00 to 1.00pm Newham Leisure Centre - Coach Wayne Owide

Thursday
12.30 to 1.30pm Atherton Leisure Centre - Coach Wayne Owide

Friday
5.30 to 6.30pm Atherton Leisure Centre - Coach Fiona Moorehead-Lane

All swimming sessions need staff and students to show ID at the leisure centre reception (quoting UEL Tri-a-Sport). The coach will meet you promptly at the start time on poolside. In order to fit into a lunch hour, limiting your session time is not a problem.

Please note:

1. Stratford campus meeting point is inside the Water Lane main entrance. Docklands campus meeting point is outside the East Building changing and shower facilities (adjacent to the main car park). People wishing to participate must arrive promptly on time for the session start time, however an early finish is appropriate if there are time constraints.

2. All sessions will be aimed at fitness improvement and general conditioning. The coaches will provide sessions applicable for the range of fitness abilities in the group.

3. UELSports encourages all staff to consider getting involved with one or two of the sessions per week. Many staff can just select one type of activity, or for the more ambitious put all three together and start your training towards a triathlon. Maybe you would also like to train towards entering as part of the UELSports team in the Newham 10k run?? However you are more than welcome to just use the sessions to get fitter and more healthy.

4. If you would like more information on the sessions please contact David Cosford on d.cosford@uel.ac.uk. If you don't have any queries, we look forward to seeing you next week.
