News in brief

Three honoraries awarded at the School of Law and Pyschology graduation ceremony

Benita Refson - honrary UELJudge Howard Levenson, Elpha LeCointe and Benita Refson were all awarded Doctor of Laws for their contributions to their chosen fields. Judge Howard Levenson, a former senior UEL lecturer, was awarded for his strong social conscience and the influence that has had on his legal career. Starting out in a Legal Aid practice in Hackney he has continued fighting for civil liberties and campaigned on the issue of limited legal aid. He was appointed a Judge of the Upper Tribunal in 2008.

Elpha LeCointe, UEL alumnus and ex-student of Judge Howard Levenson, has become an expert in Childcare law with a particular interest in cases involving non-accidental injury, neglect and emotional, physcial or sexual abuse of children. Elpha frequently represents vunerable or disadvantaged clients. Elpha works tirelessly to help get more Afro-Caribbean and Asian Lawyers into the industry and works with schemes to place ethnic minority students in mini pupillages.

The Third honorary of the day was Benita Refson OBE. Benita is the chief executive of The Place2Be which provides emotional and theraputic support to primary school children. The Place2Be helps children explore their problems through talking and creative play.

This week is the award ceremony of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Graduate School

John BevanJohn Bevan

It is with regret we inform you that John Bevan passed away on Saturday 7th November. John’s association with UEL began in April 1979. He provided technical support for the Department of Estate Management at the Waltham Forest precinct of the North East London Polytechnic - one of the precursor institutions of the University.

NELP withdrew from Waltham-Forest and the department was relocated to Duncan House. John became Chief Technician within Audio Visual Technical Services. At this time the Polytechnic changed its name to the Polytechnic of East London.

After the formation of the University in 1992 a further relocation saw John work at the main Stratford Campus within Audio Visual Services. As if this wasn’t enough John also found time to work at Maryland House within Library Services where he finished in July 2003. John’s positive attitude was a source of motivation to those around him and his work would have had a big impact on students and staff.

It was here when John made an impact within the University branch of what was then MSF as a long standing member he was interested in Health & Safety issues sufficiently to become a Union Safety Representative. He then developed into a position on the Branch Committee before progressing as a delegate to the London Area Universities Advisory Committee and a delegate to the National Conference. His final position was as Branch Chair, a position he initially took after some arm twisting but grew into and colleagues will have fond memories of him before he retired.

As an active member of the union, John always made time for others. John will be remembered for his genuine, thoughtful and caring nature. His positive attitude, and willingness to help others, John will be remembered warmly by his friends and colleagues at UEL.

Public Lecture: E-wasters: Electronics and the Environment, Thursday 10 December EB 2.44, 5.15pm
UEL Product Design alumni, Andrew Millar will be reviewing the environmental and social impacts our insatiable appetite for the latest electronic products. It is estimated that 75% of the environmental damage has been done before the computer is first switched on, due to harmful processes and toxic chemicals used in production, mining and sourcing.   Once electronic products have served their purpose they are then thrown away in favour of new versions which are faster, better looking and have more functions - in Britain alone we are responsible for disposing of over 1 million tonnes of e-waste. Andrew will talk about the local and global impacts of this as well as possibilities for the future as research shows that consumers are willing to pay more cash for a computer containing fewer chemicals.   Andrew believes that the key to achieving sustainability is to look at the production chain and eliminate aspects of waste. He has a wide range of experience in the field and has won awards for sustainable packaging design and entrepreneurial innovation. This lecture is the first event in the brand new 'Green Thing' series presented by UEL. All welcome, admission FREE. For further details visit: www.uel.ac.uk/lectureseries and to confirm your attendance, contact our events team on 020 8223 2884 or events@uel.ac.uk
