Pippa and Aneta win award for vital research into domestic violence and abuse

Dr Pippa Dell and Dr Aneta Tunariu - UELDr Pippa Dell and Dr Aneta Tunariu from our School of Psychology have won the annual Innovation in Counselling and Psychotherapy Award, which recognises work that challenges thinking, stimulates debate, or encourages the adoption of new techniques within the counselling and psychotherapy profession.

The award, made by the The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), is the culmination of Pippa and Aneta's two-year project, working with Relate to develop and evaluate their Responsive Model for Domestic Violence and Abuse (DVA).

For 30% of Relate clients, domestic violence and abuse is an issue in their lives. Pippa and Aneta's evaluation found that this model enabled clients to speak safely about what was happening to them. They also found that more than 50% of the clients in the evaluation study had felt able to reveal violence and abuse in their lives and to get the help they needed. Implementation of the Responsive Model as standard practice across the 80 Relate centres nationally will be completed by the end of 2009.

E4 Business ConferenceBusinesses across London gathered for the annual e4 Business Conference held at the Knowledge Dock Business Centre on Wednesday 4 November. One of London’s premier technology events aimed at SMEs, provides owners and managers the opportunity to learn about emerging technologies and how they can use them within their own companies. With guest speakers from Microsoft and Google, the key theme of this year’s conference was Cloud Computing and Mobile Technologies.

Martin Longstaff, Consultancy Manager at Knowledge Dock, said: “One of the primary aims of this conference is not only to inform SMEs about the latest technologies that are emerging, but also inform SMEs how the University of East London can help them adopt and implement these new technologies within their business. We have access to a number of funded programmes that are designed to help SMEs innovate and grow their business.”

Celebrity quitters get tested at our Sports Science Lab

Paul DananChloe Madeley

Celebrity wannabe ex-smokers attended the Sports Science lab on Friday 20 November to have their lung function and fitness tested for a new programme, Celebrity Quitters, to be shown on Channel 5 in January 2010.

Linda Robson’s, Chloe Madeley’s and Paul Danan’s lungs were put through their paces to determine lung function as well as to see if chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was present.  They also had their carbon monoxide levels tested and an estimate was made regarding their lung age.

Following the tests, the celebrities will be be monitored by the TV crew for two weeks while they battle with nicotine withdrawal as well as their attempts to adopt a healthier lifestyle.  The celebrities were tested by Kim Hastings from the Field of Applied Sports Science at Stratford campus who was admirably assisted by Level 3 student Daniel Cracknell and Level 2 students Annie Ottey and Esin Eminue.

Linda Robson Kim explains: “The celebrities came to the lab on Friday with no idea as to what was going to happen to them. They were all exceptionally nervous about the potential damage they may have inflicted on themselves by smoking but the production team didn’t want any of the participants to know their results until Monday when they are also going to find out the extent of monitoring they are going to be subjected to. Even their families have been recruited!”  Once the programme has been aired, the production team will release photos of the testing session.
