Roundtable Seminar: Potential Housing Legacies of London 2012 Thursday 12 November 10am-12.30pm East Thames Housing Office, 29-35 West Ham Lane, Stratford, E15 4PH The London East Research Institute and the University of East London invite you to attend a roundtable seminar/discussion to consider how to ensure that we achieve an inclusive and positive ‘Olympic’ housing legacy that acts as an exemplar of potential ‘Olympic’ legacies and urban regeneration more generally.

Speakers include: June Barnes, Chief Executive, East Thames Housing and Partner on the Triathlon Board, Penny Bernstock, London East Research Institute, Michael Edwards, Bartlett School, UCL, Ralph Luck, Director of Property, ODA, Dave Smith, Housing Advisor, London citizens

Concerns about the potentially limited housing legacy of London 2012 have been vociferously articulated over the last three years. Initially concern focussed on the demolition of existing housing; the relocation of traveller sites and the potential gentrification of this area.  Questions were raised about the impact of rising house and rental prices on Stratford’s existing residents.   Concern was also raised about what appeared to be a slowly diminishing commitment to affordable housing both as a proportion and in total numbers of the overall scheme? Would the area become another Canary Wharf characterised by social polarisation and exclusion?

However, the credit crunch has created real challenges for the potential housing legacy and as the private sector has increasingly withdrawn from the scheme, concern has shifted from the potential for gentrification to the possibility of the creation of ‘slum’ housing characterised by urban decline.

How then can we ensure that the athlete’s village becomes a place that is cutting edge?  That embraces the best features of urban design and acts as an exemplar for urban regeneration projects more generally -  Attracting  ‘mixed communities’  interpreted in its broadest and most inclusive sense and realising the themes that were so clearly articulated in initial bid applications.
