News in brief

Review of thGo to the Surveye Disability Equality Scheme

The Disability Equality Scheme has been in place since 2006 and describes our action plan to promote fair and equal access to our services for disabled students, staff and visitors. We need to review the scheme and consult with staff and students as part of that review.

The Scheme is due to be reviewed and re-submitted by 2 December.

Get involved by completing the online survey online, at: www.uel.ac.uk/services/dessurvey.htm

Connecting UEL

Connecting UEL Connecting UEL is the new social networking system for students and staff at UEL. Piloted in January, it is now available to all UEL staff and students. Connecting UEL provides a space to connect and collaborate. Users can set up their own groups and networks for social or academic purposes. For example, staff members can set up their own groups and networks to share good practice, post minutes and agendas for meetings, post regular updates to team members and build resource areas for colleagues.

The features of the system also allow you to: create a profile and post updates; blog; upload and share files, such as, photos, videos and word documents; subscribe to feeds; join and create communities and email and use synchronous chat. Get connecting now!

Go to http://connecting.uel.ac.uk/  and login with your usual user ID and password. For further information please contact elearning@uel.ac.uk

UEL Staff dress in traditional ethnic attireBlack History Month 2009 celebrations continue

Diversity Day

Our third Annual External Strategic and Development Services (ESDS) Diversity Day took place on Monday and was a great success. Many colleagues brought food from their countries, wore ethnic clothing to share their culture, taught others words in their language, had their hands painted with henna (mehndi), participated in a quiz and enjoyed themselves. A variety of items from different countries were displayed in a "Cultural Museum", and several maps were on display for people to mark where they have travelled or lived. Foods were from Ghana, Nigeria, Britain, India, Germany, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Jamaica.

National Blood Service at UEL
Register to give blood for Black History Month

Staff and students were encouraged to register as blood donors yesterday at Docklands campus. National statistics show that less than 3% of donors are from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Over 100 people registered, but don't worry if you missed registering yesterday the National Blood Service will be at Stratford campus next Wednesday (28 October) from 10am - 3pm in The Green at Stratford campus.

February's triumphant Telethon teamUEL’s second telephone fundraising campaign

After the great success of our first telethon in February 2009, where our generous alumni pledged and donated over £90,000 , we are once again picking up the phones.

In November and December our call team of 40 students will aim to speak to 2,500 of our alumni. The Annual Fund supports the following four key projects: student hardship grants, which aim to assist students who experience severe economic hardship during their studies, small research grants, which aim to support young researchers at the start of their research careers,   a new sports and leisure complex at our Docklands campus and a new Library at Stratford.

Through the match-funding scheme, the Government has committed to match donations made to higher education Institutions by £200m until 2011. For us, that means for every £2 we raise, we will get an additional £1 from the Government, making a gift of any size actually worth 50% more to UEL.

If you would like more information on the Annual Fund or the Telethon please contact Charlie Tyce on 0208 223 6443 or email c.tyce@uel.ac.uk.

Training and Development

Researcher Development Programme

Introduction to PGR Examining, Thursday 29 October 2009 1.30pm - 4.30pm, Docklands EB 1.39, Prof Tony Fell (University of Bradford) This session is designed for colleagues who are relatively new to the role of examiner or chair at a PGR viva. It introduces the general principles of effective research degree examining and the procedures that are specific to UEL. The roles and responsibilities of the examiners and the chair are examined in detail. Participants are given the opportunity to consider best practice in: selecting the internal and external examiners; organising the examination; reviewing the thesis document; conducting the viva; compiling the reports; and reviewing any revisions. The session is suitable for supervisors wishing to improve their understanding of the examination process, as well as for colleagues taking the role of examiner or chair. Deadline for booking - Thursday 22 October.

Refresher on PGR Examining, Tuesday 1 December 2pm - 4pm, Docklands EB 1.39, Dr Caron King (Kingswood Plus) This session provides participants with an opportunity to exchange ideas about how to ensure research degree examinations at UEL adhere to best practice principles. Using a mixture of fictional scenarios and real-life examples brought to the session by members of the group, participants reflect on the roles and responsibilities of examiners and chairs and help each other generate best-practice tips that they and other colleagues can apply in UEL research degree examinations. The session is designed to comprise a minimum of presentation by the session leader and a maximum of reflection and discussion by participants; and the Graduate School Registrar will be in attendance to answer any questions regarding the regulations. Deadline for booking - Friday 20 November.

To book your place, please e-mail me on c.dunmore@uel.ac.uk. When booking, please be sure to state your School and job title as well as your name and the session you want to book.

Darwinian RenaissanceThe Darwinian Renaissance in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Friday, 13 November 2009, 9.30am - 5pm (with networking after) The Octagon, Queen’s Building, Queen Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS http://www.qmul.ac.uk/about/campus/index.html

Darwin published The Origin 150 years ago. He, and many others, have applied evolutionary theory to behaviour and from that point on controversy has never been far away. Darwin's own work contributed to the rise of Comparative Psychology in the late nineteenth century, which in turn impacted upon Behaviourism. The 1970s saw the rise of Sociobiology, and much criticism of attempts to apply evolutionary biology to human concerns. Initially these criticisms were grounded in Marxist ideology and set limits to the remit of biological science: human properties required a different framework.

More recently the humanities and social sciences have taken a similar view but with a post-modern twist, actively eschewing scientific, and especially biological understanding, and in so doing forsaking prediction. In spite of this history of ideological criticism, what might be termed the Human Evolutionary Behavioural Sciences (HEBS) have diversified into Evolutionary Psychology, Human Behavioural Ecology and Cultural Evolution, and have flourished. In this meeting we hope to showcase new and exciting work from within HEBS, and look at where efforts should be focused in the future. It is our contention that the humanities and social sciences cannot ignore the central place of evolution as a theoretical framework for understanding human affairs.

This symposium celebrates 200 years of Darwin’s birth and 150 years since the publication of The Origin. Please register for this event at: https://eshop.qmul.ac.uk/events/eventdetails.asp?eventid=53
