Professor Chandra Lekha Sriram, Director of the Centre on Human Rights in Conflict (CHRC) has been awarded a Nuffield Small Grant for research on: Accountability for post-election violence in Kenya: What next? Her research will examine the ongoing debates over accountability and the prospects for the rule of law, in Kenya, following the post-election violence in 2008. As discussions continue over the option to either create a hybrid Special Tribunal or the use of International Criminal Court (ICC) investigations, Professor Sriram will conduct fieldwork in Kenya and in The Hague.
Johanna Herman, Research Fellow at the CHRC has been awarded a grant from the our Promising Researcher Scheme. She will use the funds to carry out the project Reaching for justice: Victim participation and outreach activities in transitional justice focusing on the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and International Criminal Court. The project will provide a comparative examination of victim participation in trials, provision for reparations and the outreach activities of the courts and involve fieldwork in both Cambodia and The Hague.

There have been a number of campus improvements across our Docklands and Stratford campuses this summer.
We've got new secure bicycle stands, a new glazed front to the School of Humanities and Social Science's help-desk, a new server room and refurbishments to specialist teaching laboratories at Stratford, as well as, three dance studios and improved office accommodation at Docklands.
In September we will complete the extension to the library at Stratford.

Tom Egan (pictured left), who works in our External Strategic and Development Services (ESDS), has organised a five-a-side tournament with many notable local businesses taking part. The tournament kicks-off next Wednesday 29 July, 6-9pm. Eight teams will battle it out from London City Airport, Newham Council, London Development Corporation, Gateway to London, Newham NHS PCT, Greenwich Leisure and of course UEL. In fact, we've entered two teams the UEL Lions and the ESDS Eagles.
There are two groups and two cups to be awarded. The winners' cup and medals, sponsored by our School of Health and Biosciences, will be held by the team for just one year since we plan to make the tournament an annual event. There's a runners-up trophy for the best performing team from group 2.
Tom said: "I''ve managed to combine work with pleasure because obviously a major part of our work in ESDS is developing links with external businesses, especially around sports. Also, I play five-a-side on Tuesday nights with my work colleagues."
If you would like to play five-a-side with your work colleagues on Tuesday nights, contact: Robert Taylor on r.f.taylor@uel.ac.uk or 020 8223 2656. All abilities welcome.
Supporters and spectators are really sought after for the tournament, so if you fancy a warm summer's evening in pleasant company with the chance to cheer our teams on to glory, get along to: Powerleague Newham, Norwegian Playing Fields, Jenkins Lane, Newham IG11 0AD

Conjoin:me 31 July Super-Deluxe, Tokyo
A collaboration between Sian-Kate Mooney and Hedley Roberts who have developed a series of pieces that explore the relationship between the image, the textile and the conjoined form. Examining the concepts and themes of cross-linking, engraftment, mirroring, twinning, and the double, they have produced a series of fabric sculptures using pattern-cutting, painting and large-scale digital textile printing. These sculptures will be presented as forms that will be interacted with and 'worn' during a live performance event. The performance will be accompanied by audio visual media. Hedley Roberts is an artist and graduate of both Central Saint Martins and Royal College of Art. Hedley has presented his work at the International Symposium of Electronic Arts in Nagoya in 2002 and various international Art Galleries. More recently his paintings utilise found and appropriated images from movies, magazines, art history and contemporary fashion culture to create personal, intimate psychodynamic narratives. Hedley is currently Acting Subject Director for Digital Arts and Visual Communication at the University of East London.
Sian-Kate Mooney trained as a Fashion Designer, and is the founder and designer of Grab&Mac fashion label. Sian has shown her collections at London Fashion Week, Trannoi in Paris and ‘British Hotwave’ in Tokyo in 1998 and 1999. Her client base in Tokyo was extensive including Isetan, Barney’s and Agosto.
Her current creative practice extends beyond the body, exploring the boundaries of the silhouette in the creation of sculptural forms that are no longer restrained by the conventions of traditional notions of fashion. Sian is Programme Leader for MA Fashion at the University of East London.
This project has been made possible by the support of KlienDytham Architects, UEL Research Funding, UEL Learning and Teaching Funding, the Fabpad printing bureau and Vantan University, Tokyo. For information: http://www.conjoin.me.uk

Inaugural and public lecture: The Idea of Prevention in Social Work - Examining the past and imagining the future Thursday, 15 October 5.15pm Docklands Campus
An inaugural and public lecture by Professor Steven Trevillion, Dean of our of School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The case of Baby Peter has led many people to argue that in recent years there has been too great a focus on prevention and that it is time for the pendulum to swing back towards protection. This lecture will take issue with this argument and seek to show that it is rooted in some fundamental misconceptions about the nature of preventive social work and its relationship to concerns about protection. The lecture will develop a set of arguments first put forward by Professor Trevillion in 2008 in ‘Preventive Social Work’, a chapter he wrote for The Art of Social Work Practice edited by Toyin Okitikpi and Cathy Aymer. All welcome, admission FREE. For further details visit: www.uel.ac.uk/lectureseries and to confirm your attendance, contact our events team on 020 8223 2884 or events@uel.ac.uk
