Visitors at the launch

UEL creates Extra opportunities with Barking Learning Centre launch John Denham, Secretary of State for, Universities and Skills, officially opened the Barking Learning Centre on Tuesday 10 June, celebrating the establishment of a major new focus for further and higher education in east London. UEL Extra runs a wide range of courses at the BLC, ranging from taster days and short courses to foundation degrees and career development programmes.

UEL gets a Life We have now purchased an island on SL™ (Second Life) to provide a presence for any projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing our students’ learning experience. The island is currently unavailable to the general public while the implementation team prepares the terrain. Visit session “UEL gets a Second Life®” at the Learning and Teaching Conference (Thursday 26 June) and share your ideas on how we can develop this technology.

Successful Support Day for Researchers Over 50 research students and members of staff attended the Library and Learning Services first Support Day for Researchers (3 June) at Docklands. Soundwaves invite

Shadwell Soundwaves Three graduates from our MA Art in Architecture: David Little, Simon Keeley and Nicola Gibson, launch their new public art work Shadwell Soundwaves. Jim Fitzpatrick MP opens the launch at 12pm on Friday, 20 June, at Watney Piazza, in Shadwell, after a local school performance at 11.30. All welcome, at Watney Piazza between Watney Market and Shadwell DLR E1 2 NP.
Shadwell Soundwaves is a series of six stone benches at the centre of Tarling Heights and Watney Piazza; Toynbee Housing Association's new complex of flats, shops and a park for local people, just below Watney Market. Quiet Day for UEL Our Chaplaincy would like to organise a Quiet Day for staff who would appreciate the opportunity to take a step back for a while and "just be". The plan is to go somewhere attractive and peaceful for a few hours, with the style and content of the day to be agreed in advance by those planning to attend. This is conceived as a pressure-free time, possibly with some input for reflection, if people wish. Simple shared lunch. Free theatre tickets for all UEL students and staff Theatre Royal Stratford East is offering a limited number of FREE tickets to the performance of Dangalnama at 7.30pm this Saturday, 14 June. Gripping and satirical, Dangalnama is an account of sectarian rioting in India since the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984 and of a younger generation making sense of their history. Performed in five languages (Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, English and Kannada) with English sub-titles, Dangalnama is an eye-opening take on Indian’s recent past that also looks forward to a more unified future. This powerful 90min production is followed by a lively 30min discussion with the cast and director.
