Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall visited our Stratford campus on Tuesday 29 January, to open the superb new Centre for Clinical Education in Podiatry, Physiotherapy, Complementary Medicine and Sports Science.
At Stratford, Her Royal Highness toured our new Centre, and was shown the unique clinical and teaching facilities and research projects.
Jacqueline Coolen (39), a third-year student on UEL’s BSc (Hons) degree in Podiatric Medicine, said: “The Duchess said she spends so much of her time on her feet that she could probably do with some treatment herself! Like the rest of us, she said that she often can’t wait to get home and take off her shoes. She did have nice shoes, though!”
Her Royal Highness spent nearly two hours in the building, meeting staff and students from Health and Bioscience, and partners including the Chair and Chief Executive of the Society of Podiatrists and Physiotherapists, of which she is Patron, the Chair and Chief Executive of the British Paralympics Association, Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham, Tessa Sanderson CBE, and representatives of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, Newham Primary Care Trust and Stratford Renaissance Partnership.
Neil Simmonite, Senior Lecturer in Podiatric Medicine, said: “Her Royal Highness was charming, and seemed very interested in the professional aspects of podiatry.” At a reception for over 100 distinguished guests, Her Royal Highness unveiled a plaque, and was presented a posy by Claire Duguid, the newest member of staff in Podiatry.
Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cornwall said: “Thank you all for showing me round today and teaching me all about feet. I think this is a fantastic place, and I’m very proud to be a patron of podiatry.”
Professor Martin Everett, Vice-Chancellor of the University of East London, said: "We are absolutely thrilled that her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cornwall, has been able to join us today to open our new Centre for Clinical Education. This unique facility, developed in partnership with the NHS, is a major milestone in the provision of clinical education in London, and marks a new phase in the development of our university here in Stratford.”
This area has seen a significant boost with the advent of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. UEL is working in partnership with British Swimming, the London Borough of Newham, Newham PCT and other agencies to improve health and fitness among local residents of all ages.
Preetpal Judge (22), a third-year student on UEL’s BSc (Hons) degree in Podiatric Medicine, said: “We were showing Her Royal Highness a doppler, which checks pulses in the feet. She was fascinated by how it can indicate the overall effect of the patient.”
Our clinical facilities for Podiatry, run in partnership with Newham Primary Care Trust, are among the best in the country, and co-locating clinical and professional education has created a number of innovations in the design and layout of the Centre. The upper floors house orthotics laboratories, a minor operations suite, and teaching laboratories for Physiotherapy, Complementary Medicine including acupuncture and herbal medicine, and Sports and Exercise Science.

Commissioner
Danuta Hübner (p[ictured centre), the European Commissioner for Regional Policy visited our Docklands campus on Tuesday 29 January as part of a trip organised by South East England Development Agency (SEEDA). Commisioner Hübner toured the Knowledge Dock, and met many of our staff and partners who are managing innovative facilities and projects which have received support from the European Regional Development Fund.
Carole Snee (pictured far right), Director of External and Strategic Development Services, said: "Danuta and the people accompanying her on the delegation were very impressed by the work being done by Knowledge Dock and UEL in terms of truly engaging with the European Regional agenda. Danuta explained: 'universities often build science parks and research facilities, but your work is really special in that you are uniquely, actively engaging with both the local economy and regional development."

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's GRAND CHALLENGES EXPLORATIONS
Grand Challenges Explorations is a new five-year US$100 million fast-track grants initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It will support hundreds of early-stage research projects pursuing creative concepts for new global health solutions, including vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, and other technologies for health problems disproportionately affecting poor countries. Projects will initially be funded at the level of US$100,000 each, with the opportunity for additional funding in the future for projects that show promise. A key goal of the Explorations initiative is to promote greater diversity in global health research. In particular, we hope to involve scientists who don’t typically work in global health – this includes innovators in the developing world, from complementary disciplines, and in the private sector, as well as young investigators.
FAST-TRACK GRANTS: To make it as easy as possible for scientists to apply, the Explorations initiative will use a new fast-track grant making approach. Applicants for Explorations grants will be asked to submit relatively short funding proposals, and will not necessarily be required to show preliminary data.
GETTING INVOLVED: Sign up at the Grand Challenges in Global Health website – www.gcgh.org – to receive email updates with news and information on Explorations funding opportunities. The first call for grant proposals will be posted to the website in early 2008, along with the list of topics being addressed and application instructions.

Dr. John Sheldrake, a Senior Lecturer in the Business School, has recently had an article published in the Bulletin of the Royal College of Pathologists.
Jointly written with Dr Tina Matthews, Consultant Cyto/histopathologist at Kingston Hospital, it details the life and work of the Matthew Baillie (1761-1823) – the ‘father’ of modern pathology. The article is the second in a series, the first covered the life and contribution to pathology of Benjamin Collins Brodie (1783-1862), which will ultimately be published in book form.
John, who has published widely on management topics as well as aspects of health and engineering, joined the Business School in July 2007 from the Tanaka Business School at Imperial College London.’
