UEL Progress Bursary Holders are able to collect £100 worth of "Free" books now and pay for them when they receive their next bursary payment - which in most cases will be next Spring, when they successfully progress into Semester B.
Both the UEL Progress Bursary and Progress Card schemes have contributed significantly towards increased book purchases amongst our students and an improved rate of retention, since their inception, in September 2006.
The John Smith's "Free" books offer closes on 31 October, so please let your students know, and reinforce the importance of buying the core books that you have recommended for your programmes.
The Progress Card will be available to all staff in November when you will not only earn loyalty points on purchases, but also receive a ten percent discount on books and stationery.
Txttools is a company that designs online applications enabling SMS text messages to be sent and received securely from a desktop computer to any number of mobile phones instantly and in a way that is proven to save both money and time.
On Tuesday 4 December, a one day Txttools conference will take place at our Docklands campus, focused on the use of simple technology to improve the way further and higher education institutions communicate with students and staff. This will be a marvellous opportunity to network with colleagues throughout the sector - delegates from a range of education institutions and and further education colleges are also attending - and the best thing is it's FREE.

ESDS celebrates Black History Month
Colleagues in External Development and Strategic Services celebrated Black History Month yesterday by sharing snacks from around the world and in some cases wearing traditional dress.

Black History Month continues as part of our Public Lecture Series and some of the hightlights include: two film presentations from alumnus Roy Thomas Voices Unseen (18 Oct 5 - 7 Business School Lecture Theatre) and Faces Indie Jungle (25 October 6.30pm Business School Lecture Theatre), which explore cultural xenophobia and an history of 'drum'n bass' respectively.
Also, on Weds 24 October, Inclusive New Media: Designing Accessible Websites (East Building G.08) by Dr Helen Kennedy and a documentary film screening, presented by Media Studies and Cultural Studies student Clarence Davies Man dem nor Gladdy'O (Thurs 25 Oct 12 - 2pm West Building Lecture Theatre) about Sierra Leone which is only now just beginning to recover from 12 years of civil war.
The programme of Black History month Public Lecture Series events ends with panel debate: Keeping the peace? Gangs, culture and identity (31 October venue tbc) and poetry readings.

As part of the new BSc Acupuncture programme at Stratford, you are invited to a FREE open lecture, Limits to Science. Max Gascoyne Payne, born 1930, is a compelling and entertaining speaker and was senior lecturer in Philosophy at Sheffield Hallam University. He remains an active lecturer, reviewer and writer and is a trustee of The Scientificand Medical Network. He is especially interested in the convergence of the philosophy of mysticism and the philosophy of science.

Our annual Wise Up health and safety events will be held at our Docklands Campus in the Atrium on 30 October (10am-4pm) and at our Stratford Campus in the Education building on 1 November (10am -4pm). Please make a note in your diary!

This one-day conference explores how we can use the one-off opportunity of the London 2012 Games to create both quick wins and sustainable gains in public health, regeneration, sustainable place-making, individual and community well-being and quality of life.
London faces huge public health challenges. To tackle these, NHS organisations are increasingly working with local government, social landlords, universities and colleges, community and voluntary agencies. The Wanless reform agenda is also strongly pushing health services in the direction of change.
This conference is a chance to create new coalitions for change and explore more effective ways of working together. Centuries of Celebrity: Re-Contextualizing the Meaning of Fame. Friday 27 June 2008, Docklands Campus.
Abstracts of 250 words are invited by 9 November 2007.
Whilst the concept of celebrity has traditionally been perceived as a phenomenon of the twentieth century, this conference seeks to reconsider its production and consumption across a broader historical timeframe. Centuries of Celebrity is an interdisciplinary conference that welcomes papers which open up a dialogue between participants in relation to the meaning and value of fame across the centuries and in so doing re-examine what it means to be famous. We invite papers which explore past and present constructs of celebrity in order to develop an historical contextualisation of this field of inquiry. Potential topics might include: Authenticity, Heroes, Representations, Scandal, Tabloidization and Mediations

Inclusive New Media Design, which is run from our Rix Centre for Innovation and Learning Disability is an exciting new research project which aims to encourage web designers, developers and editors to build websites accessible to people with cognitive disabilities.
Inclusive New Media Design is running a series of free training workshops for web professionals, to provide them with the skills and knowledge to ensure that their sites meet the legal requirement of addressing the needs of all disabled users, including the cognitively disabled web user community.
The workshops will show how to build accessible websites, showcase inspiring new design and offer a space to discuss creative solutions to making websites that are usable by people with cognitive disabilities. They will also offer participants a unique opportunity to test their websites with cognitively disabled users and listen to what this user group has to say about what works for them.
Workshops will take place early in 2008 at our Docklands campus. The deadline for recruitment is 31 October 2007.

Students Frances Cetti and Solveigh Goett have been awarded grants from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), to fund their PhD research in UEL’s School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies.
Frances completed her MA in Refugee Studies here and her PhD focuses on confusion surrounding the idea of a ‘European’ identity - in particular, the significance of the figure of the ‘refugee’ in growing fears about 'cultural pollution'.
Solveigh Goett’s PhD focuses on the concept of textile narratives, combining a traditional academic approach with practice-based creation of textile objects and installations.
Solveigh said: “Text and textiles are related, both as words and as concepts - they come from the same Latin root, and both involve telling stories. Long before TV and radio, long before books and print, stories were being told through textiles. The spinning of yarns and the weaving of tales bear witness to a relationship that has been fundamental in the creation of the fabric of life."
