News in brief

Most successful ever!

Mary Hunt pictured with some of the Enrolment Team.Head of Registry, Mary Hunt (pictured centre) describes Enrolment 2007 as our most successful ever. Last Friday Mary commented: "We went into First Week with 2,700 - that's almost 50% - of our new students who are eligible to enrol, already fully enrolled. These students came to enrolment only to get their ID cards. We are going into our last day now with 4,100 fully enrolled students.'

This is a significant improvement on last year, both in the number of enrolments completed and the reduction in waiting times. And with over 3,200 ID cards issued within 4 days the longest time any student had to wait was ten minutes.

Mary explains: "With enrolment increasingly online, we are gradually evolving into an ID Production Centre which also offers enrolment assistance to students who receive late offers. I think their enrolment this year has been a marvellous first experience for a great number of our new students."

For the next two weeks we will continue to have an enrolment centre on the Business School Trading Floor and we will have welcome points for students arriving late on the Ground Floor of the North Block and the Romford Road entrance to University House, on our Docklands and Stratford campuses.

Throughout First Week Student Admissions remained busy, handling thousands of calls as well as meeting applicants face to face.

Director of Student Services, Brian Hipkin says: "Having all our processes under one roof has really enabled us to provide a smooth, seamless service to our students and staff this year. With Student Admissions and Enrolment on the Trading Floor, in the Hub we provided many support services relating to student finance and welfare. Overall, I'd summarise this year's First Week as one of lots of smiles and generally widespread contentment."

From Mary, Emma and Brian special thanks go to: IT Services, temporary staff employed throughout Clearing and First Week and the cooperation and commitment of our whole community to making First Week such a great success.

Online Tutoring: Managing and Fostering Online Communication

Online tutoringDates: Monday 8 October – Monday 29 October (about 15 hours)
Mode of delivery: fully online using UEL Plus
Why take this course? This short 15-hour course is designed for academic tutors who wish to communicate with their students online and to encourage them to communicate with each other in order to improve peer support and informal learning. It is strongly recommended for those staff who are going to tutor Distance Learning modules but is equally of benefit to those teaching modules delivered on campus. It could also be of interest to those who are not actually involved in academic tutoring e.g. those using online communication tools as a way of facilitating online interaction between a particular group, or those involved in supporting students online in some way.
