"FREE BOOKS!"

UEL Progress Card

John Smith's are running a "FREE BOOKS" offer for all UEL Progress Bursary students. This means our 1st and 2nd year students who are eligible for the UEL Progress Bursary can take their books away now, when they need them, and have the money for them deducted when they receive their Progress Bursary funds.

The Progress Card is also now available free to all our students, with a built-in loyalty scheme, exclusive discount offers and promotions for all cardholders, whether they are eligible for a Progress Bursary, or not.

From November the Progress Card will also be made available FREE to all staff, who will be able to enjoy a ten per cent discount on booksand stationery and earn loyalty points for purchases.

Following the launch of the UEL Progress Bursary and Progress Card in September 2006, not only has our student retention improved but John Smith's has also reported a 40% increase in textbook sales. Also, since February 2007, over 1,000 laptops have been sold.

The Progress Card can be used in both branches of John Smith's or on their website at www.jscampus.co.uk

To ensure the continued success of the UEL Progress Bursary Progress Card, colleagues are asked to:

- Provide John Smith's with reading lists of recommended texts
- Work with John Smith's staff to make sure that the right books and the best offers are available for our students this year
- Tell your students about the benefits of the UEL Progress Bursary and Progress Card as well as the "FREE BOOKS" offer in meetings /lectures with them.

If you would like more information about the Progress Card and John Smith's plans for this autumn contact Lilian Irving (Bookshop Manager) - lilian.irving@johnsmith.co.uk

Online Tutoring: Managing and Fostering Online Communication

Online tutoring

Dates: Monday 8 October – Monday 29 October (about 15 hours)
Mode of delivery: fully online using UEL Plus
Why take this course? This short 15-hour course is designed for academic tutors who wish to communicate with their students online and to encourage them to communicate with each other in order to improve peer support and informal learning. It is strongly recommended for those staff who are going to tutor Distance Learning modules but is equally of benefit to those teaching modules delivered on campus. It could also be of interest to those who are not actually involved in academic tutoring e.g. those using online communication tools as a way of facilitating online interaction between a particular group, or those involved in supporting students online in some way.

Additional details and online booking form: http://www.uel.ac.uk/sdel/staff_development/courses/online_tutoring.htm

Contemporary style: graduate Kelly's collection now on sale in Selfridges

Kelly Shaw

Fashion fans can follow in the footsteps of Victoria Beckham by checking out the work of University of graduate Kelly Shaw, whose work goes on sale in a special collection at Selfridges. Two of Kelly's garments – a red-and-white striped canvas dress and a white lacy rain-mac – are on display in a special pop-up shop on the first floor of the famous Oxford Street store from Monday 1 to Sunday 7 October.

Kelly said: “Even if I don’t sell anything, it’s still great that so many people will be able to see my work. I’ve already had a couple of freelance commissions, and I’ve recently started a bespoke tailoring course, which is going really well.”
