Four new professors and an inaugural

Corinne Squire

We are delighted to announce our four new professors, effective from 1 October, are: Stephen Briggs (School of Social Science, Media and Cultural Studies), Rachel Tribe (Psychology), Kofi Kufuor (Law) and Corinne Squire (pictured left: School of Social Science, Media and Cultural Studies). While dates for their inaugural lectures will follow, Professor Andrew Silke's inaugural 21st Century Shocks: the psychology of terror takes place in October (see What's happening listings below). Vice-Chancellor, Professor Martin Everett will introduce Andrew's lecture.

Corinne Squire is a co-director of our Centre for Narrative Research, the first centre of its kind in the UK or internationally, and the only one to focus on narrative research in the social sciences. Her work focuses on subjectivity in popular cultures, and has included studies of Oprah Winfrey and other television talk shows and of young people's talk about aggression. She has researched issues around HIV and subjectivity since the early 1990s, and is currently continuing an interview study of people living with HIV in the UK.

Her book on HIV in South Africa (Routledge, 2007) has just been published. Other publications include the edited collections Public Emotions (with 6, Radstone and Treacher; Palgrave, 2006), Uses of Narrative (with Andrews, Sclater and Treacher, 2004), Culture in Psychology (Routledge, 2000) and the co-authored Morality USA (with Ellen Friedman, 1998).

Kofi Kufuor’s research has focused on economic integration in West Africa, the developing countries and the world trading system, and New Institutional Economics. He is the author of The Institutional Transformation of the Economic Community of West African States (Ashgate, 2006) and World Trade Governance and Developing Countries: the GATT/WTO Code Committee System (Blackwell, 2004).

Rachel Tribe is an internationally acknowledged authority within her research and clinical specialist areas - professional and ethical practice issues within clinical practice, working with interpreters in mental health, and the mental health needs of internally displaced people and refugees in the UK and abroad.

Stephen Briggs is the Director of our Centre for Social Work Research, Reader in Social Work and Vice Dena in the Adolescent Department of the Tavistock Clinic.

Full house at First Week briefing

Director of Student Services, Brian Hipkin.

Director of Student Services, Brian Hipkin (pictured left) chaired a First Week briefing this morning attended by around 300 staff and student ambassadors. Acting Head of Student Admissions, Emma Burchfield explained the admissions' procedures to the gathered and that Admissions staff will continue to have a strong presence on the Trading Floor throughout First Week.

Head of Registry, Mary Hunt outlined the enrolment processes - and described that 'Magic Moment' when an applicant is  ATR'd  (a 5-minute process once the offer has been made and the conditions including those relating to fees have been met) moving them from Admissions data, to become eligible for enrolment.

Mary explained that many more people have re-enrolled online this year, compared to last. Assistant Credit Control Manager, Cindy Parking told us that Credit Control will be based on the Trading Floor throughout First Week for students to pay fees and organise payment plans.

Students will be greeted as they enter the Business School by our Triage team lead by Mandy Estridge who together with her Information and Enquires team and student ambassadors will direct students to the right place on the Trading Floor to ensure they complete their enrolment with a minimum of fuss and wait.

Up in the Hub we will have our Student Money, Advice and Rights Team (SMART), Lucy Watson of Admissions co-ordinating Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks, Disability and Dyslexia Services, Skillzone, our Information Advice and Guidance team and a special service for students who want to apply for the Student Discount oyster card but don't have either a debit or credit card.

Late arrivals (those applicants joining us after 21 September and before 5 October) will  be directed to a single late arrivals help point on each campus. At Docklands it will be on the ground floor of the North Building and at Stratford it will be in the Romford Road entrance to University House.

In bringing the briefing to a close Brian reminded us: "We've all worked very hard ensure our students have the best possible experience during First Week, a time  that can be stressful, but the main thing to remember is that it will be a busy, dynamic week with lots of activity - so please do enjoy it!"

Events calendar and Public Lecture Series 07/08

Poster for Andrew Silke's Lecture

We have a busy events, conferences and public lectures calendar over the coming weeks. Some highlights include:

Friday 14 September, a one-day conference De-medicalising misery to mark the retirement of Professor Mary Boyle and to celebrate 30 years of clinical psychology training at UEL. De-medicalising Misery examines the effects of our current understandings of distress, and explores ways to rethink them. Registraiotn is now full on this conference which brings together psychiatrists, service users and clinical psychologists at the forefront of this work.

Our Centre on Human Rights in Conflict presents a panel discussion on the subject of the Extraterritorial application of human rights obligations on Tuesday 2 October at Duncan House, followed by Professor Andrew Silke's inaugural lecture 21st Century shocks: the psychology of terror, on Tuesday 9 October. Andrew's lecture explores the way in which psychology is increasingly recognised as key to developing an effective understanding of terrorists and terrorism. Andrew aims to provide a review of some of the psychological approaches to studying terrorism and the key findings which have emerged. On Friday 12 October Professor Mica Nava's lecture to accompany the launch of her book Visceral Cosmopolitanism: gender, culture and the normalisation of difference takes place at the Rich Mix Cultural Foundation in Bethnal Green.

What's Happened

All aboard for university! Newham taxi tour gives students a lift

Studemt Ambassadors and our liveried taxi.

Student Ambassadors were out and about in Newham last week, raising awareness among residents about the programmes we have to offer.

On Monday 3 September, students Holly Jeffrey of Stratford and Tessa Alexis, from Tower Hamlets, enjoyed a whistle-stop tour of some of Newham’s most celebrated landmarks in one of 16 new liveried taxis.

They travelled from our Docklands campus to Stratford Station via the Beckton Globe community centre, East Ham Town Hall, West Ham United’s stadium at Upton Park, Stratford’s cultural quarter and our Stratford campus, talking to people and handing out information.

Tessa, a student on our Combined Honours degree in Fine Art and Digital Arts and Moving Image, said: “It’s been a great afternoon; we’ve seen some really interesting places and hopefully inspired hundreds of people to think about coming to university."

On Friday (7 September) lunchtime Student Ambassadors Katie and Francesca were giving our flyers in and around Stratford Shopping Centre.

Our next Open Evening takes place on Wednesday 12 September, 4-8pm at both campuses, with a particular focus on part-time and postgraduate study. Tutors, current students and specialist advisors will provide information and advice on all aspects of university life.
