L-R: Mo Pamplin and Maggie McClinden of our Education and Community Partnerships Team.

During clearing and late summer recruitment, many colleagues and teams come together to make up and provide a full service to applicants, hoping to join us this September.

As well as our colleagues staffing the Clearing Telephone Centre and Enrolment processes, our Education and Community Partnerships (ECP) team has been running our Applicant Information Centres, at Stratford and Docklands campuses.

Maggie McLinden (pictured left with Mo Pamplin), our FE and Schools Partnership Manager, leads on managing the Applicant Information Centres. Maggie says: "This has been a really great time for us because it has brought everyone together to deliver a drop-in service for prospective students, giving face to face guidance, on their chosen study route. This involves: academic colleagues; enrolment and admissions colleagues; information, advice and guidance colleagues and our Skill Zone, all coming together in one space.
In practice, this means that our processes work smoothly and effectively for our applicants, as well as providing greater information-sharing and co-working opportunities for different teams."

In the first two days of Clearing alone, 300 people visited the Applicant Information Centres, and of these 130 were made direct offers. In total, 500 people have visited the Centres. The wide range of enquirers varies from applicants who have just finished Access programmes, want to start New Beginnings and New Beginnings 2, to international, postgraduate and full-time undergraduate.

Maggie concludes: "We've got a really good feedback loop going in the Applicant Information Centres where our advisors can refer and signpost applicants to other services, such as: international, disability and finance - as well as get direct feedback, straight away, from our academic colleagues to ensure applicants are placed on suitable programmes."

If colleagues outside of the Clearing Telephone Centre receive any calls relating to joining us on a degree programme or short course this September please put them through to 020 8223 3333.

Looking after our teaching spaces

Our Help Desk Team: Carol Vanhoven, Ian Bruce and Kelly Donno.

Frequent use of our teaching spaces by many users can mean considerable upkeep and maintenance for each of our rooms.

Our Facilities Services have asked if we could all be, not only, more aware of the cost of keeping the rooms in good condition, but also, more considerate to our colleagues who may be using the rooms, later in the day. The main things to look out for are:
Litter Could all users be urged to place their litter in the bins provided rather than leaving it on the floor, chairs or tables. If you find the teaching room doesn't have a litter bin; please report it to our Facilities Helpdesk on Extension 2000.
Lighting Over time, turning off the lights when you leave the room saves a lot on our electricity bill as well as helping to reduce our carbon footprint.
AV Turning off the computer and data projector; lengthens the life of the equipment and projector bulbs, which are expensive to replace and also saves on electricity.
Windows Closing the windows before you leave, especially in winter cuts down on heat loss helps save on energy costs. Whiteboards Please remember to clean the whiteboards before you leave and to use only markers suitable for whiteboards.
Boxes and materials Please remember to take boxes of booklets and teaching materials with you when you leave.

Chinese leaders visit for lessons on UK university life

Group photo of Chinese delegates with Professor Martin Everett (front row, red tie) and Dr Iain MacRury (front row, green and black striped tie)

Leading Chinese education officials visited us last week to learn more about life at a modern UK university.

Professor Martin Everett (pictured front row red tie and Dr Iain MacRury front row gree tie with the delegation), welcomed the 35 university directors and vice-presidents, who were taking part in a leadership course organised by Oxford University to offer an insight into the British Higher Education system.

Professor Everett said: “UEL is now a global learning community with over 20,000 students from more than 120 countries. We have forged close links with numerous leading universities and colleges worldwide, and, with 2012 on the horizon, we are particularly interested in developing good working relationships with institutions in China.

The Chinese delegates’ visit was co-ordinated by UEL’s London East Research Institute (LERI) as part of a series of events run in partnership with Oxford University. Based at UEL’s Docklands campus, LERI provides a regional network for research and consultancy on issues of urban regeneration.
