Welcome to our weekly in Focus update...... |
Past Issues << | Issue 66: Monday 20 August 2007

Almost 5,000 calls were received on A Level results day, the first day of Clearing 2007, and just a few days on this figure now totals well over 7,000. Although, figures for the number of callers follow a similar pattern to last year, the nature and purpose of the calls has undergone a marked change.
Early, on Sunday 12 August,UCAS sent us A Level results for those students we had already made offers to, and our Student Admissions team spent the rest of the day busily matching and confirming around 1,400 offers.
Last Thursday applicants received emails from UCAS confirming their university place even before they’d received their A Level results! Also for the first time this year applicants have been able to check the status of their application, online, through the UCAS website.
Emma Burchfield, Acting Head of Student Admissions, explains: “Last year many of our callers had already applied to us and were calling to check on their applications. Instead this year, we are receiving just as many calls but they are from high-calibre, new applicants who are approaching us for the first time.”
Indra Linton, Psychology Registrar says: “From an operational perspective everything has gone so smoothly – mainly due to all Schools and Services being in one place. Any issues are resolved immediately and the environment here is friendly. I get the chance to work with a lot of colleagues I rarely see at Stratford. I’m grateful to Student Admissions for all the hard work they’ve done and the temporary staff they’ve appointed are really super.”
Over a hundred staff attended the final session, in a series of training workshops organised by Student Admissions, last week. Adrienne Clarke, Head of International Office, highlighted The Blue Book – an internal guide to international qualification equivalencies. Niru Williams, Head of International Student Advice presented on some of the key aspects relating to the law as it applies to international students and their visa status. For example, Niru stressed that we cannot offer part-time programmes to international students, who are in the UK, on student visas.
If colleagues outside of the Clearing Telephone Centre receive any calls relating to joining us on a degree programme or short course this September please put them through to 020 8223 3333.

Dr Hossein Saidpour, a leading expert in the field of polymers has developed a new material that promises a cheaper and more flexible alternative to lead in radiation shielding.
Dr Hossein Saidpour, Principal Lecturer and Reader in Materials at our School of Computing and Technology, has been working with a team of postgraduate research students to conduct extensive trials of the new substance, which has already been successfully tested in NHS X-ray departments.
Dr Saidpour, an expert in polymers and plastics, said: “At the moment, the only material effective in screening radiation is lead, which is very heavy, cumbersome and expensive. The protective aprons that X-ray technicians have to wear are far from user-friendly.
“For years, I’ve been seeking to create a material much lighter in weight and more easily mouldable, but with at least as effective radiation shielding properties as lead. This new material is a fraction of the density and a fraction of the cost of lead.
“Further work still needs to be done, but our initial trials of its radiation shielding properties have proved extremely promising. The material is currently being patented, so I am unable to reveal its exact nature, but it screens effectively against the whole range of electromagnetic spectrum, including X-rays, gamma rays, and microwave frequencies.
“The material’s properties can be optimised for use in many applications, such as protective clothing, panels and instrumentations in radiology departments and nuclear power plants, and perhaps to shield radiation emanating from mobile phones.”
