Senior Lecturer in Media and Advertising Dr Marta Rabikowska, won the Grand Jury Award at the European Association for Consumer Research Film Festival, the highlight of a major international conference held in Milan from 10-14 July.
Her award-winning documentary, Consumption, Belonging and Place, investigates the relationships between ethnicity and consumption in a single street in south-east London, exploring the complexity of the community through the eyes of the researcher herself.
Dr Rabikowska said: "As a Polish academic living and working in London, I'm extremely interested in how people develop a sense of 'home'. This documentary began life as a way of understanding my research in the context of one of London's most multicultural and underprivileged areas: Plumstead.
"By focusing on a single street, I was able to closely observe socio-cultural relationships at work as residents carried out their daily shopping. Following their routine activities gave a great insight into the role that market places can play in influencing people's attitudes towards their area and fellow residents.'
Dr Rabikowska produced Consumption, Belonging, and Place with support from several of her colleagues and students, including cinematographer Matthew Hawkins, a recent graduate of our BA (Hons) degree in Film and Video: Theory and Practice.
A special screening of the documentary will take place at our Docklands Campus this September. The film will also be published as a DVD available through the international journal Consumption, Markets & Culture.

They say you never forget how to ride a bike and Del Basi has proven this, taking to the saddle after a ten-year break to raise money for Leukaemia Research, the UK's leading blood cancer charity.
Del (pictured left with some of the UEL team members at the finish line – from left to right: Paul Kernaghan, Del Basi, Greg Price and James Hiew) started supporting Leukaemia Research when his eldest daughter Min was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) a few years ago.
Speaking about the experience, Del said: “Thanks to the expert treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital and a bone marrow transplant from her sister Vinny over a year ago, my daughter has not shown symptoms of leukaemia since. Thankful for Leukaemia Research’s work in improving treatments for blood cancer patients, I decided to train for the London Bikeathon.”
Including Del the elven-strong UEL team took part in London Bikeathon on 15 July and they were: David Douglas, Greg Price, Paul Kernaghan, James Hiew, Roz Milroy, Mike Raddie, Jan Bernet, Kevin Pearch and former colleague Ted O'Donnell. Collectively our team raised over £1,500.
Speaking about the race, organiser for the UEL team Jan Bernet said: “This is the fifth year of entering for myself, Kevin and Ted. We cycled 26 miles but Roz, Mike and David did the 52 mile challenge. We've been entering each year because we think it's such an important cause and because it's a lovely way to spend a Sunday with friends and colleagues.”
