Institute of Health and Human Development a partner in £9.46m Well London programme

Professor Adrian Renton presents ( second right) at the London Health Report Seminar panel in April.

Our Institute of Health and Human Development will research and evaluate the impacts of an innovative five-year programme working with local people to transform their health in twenty of London’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Well London, developed by a unique alliance of seven partners (including us) was granted a total of £9.46m from the Big Lottery Fund's £164m Well-being programme, it was announced just last week..

The Well London programme will take a rigorous approach to research and evaluation. Professor Adrian Renton of UEL’s Institute of Health and Human Development, and his team have developed a unique framework that will demonstrate in a robust way the impact of the interventions. This is the first time that this approach has been used at a citywide scale.

Professor Adrian Renton said: “As a society, we are inundated with health promotion campaigns and there are a plethora of health interventions, but without properly controlled research and evaluation, it is very difficult to establish how successful any of them actually are. This will be the first time that a controlled evaluation framework is built into the programme and this means we will be able to monitor the various projects and identify what works and what doesn’t work in real communities.”

What's Happened

Learning and Teaching Conference 2007

Professor Lizbeth Goodman with musicians James Brosnan (centre), Maciej Hrybowickz (right) and members of the team.

Our Learning and Teaching Conference was a great success this year and the feedback we have received is extremely positive.

The range and quality of presentations was excellent and the only real complaint was that colleagues couldn’t get to all the sessions that interested them.

Presentations ranged from the research work using assistive technologies undertaken by Lizbeth Goodman (picture left) and her team to presentations by Femi Bola, our Head of Employability and two of our former students, now working for top listed companies on what our students need to get them into high level graduate employment.

There were demonstrations and workshops, fully evaluated work ready for publication and work in progress.  To review what you missed please go to: http://www.uel.ac.uk/learning-teaching/index.htmWe were delighted to be able to present two of our three UEL Teaching Fellowships to Stephanie Sandland and Chris Pawson. Sharon Brown, our third UEL Fellow was not able to join us and we will make other arrangements to present her with her award. We were also delighted to be able to announce that two colleagues, Julie Baldry Currens and Sharon Brown have been awarded National Teaching Fellowships. This is fantastic news and really opens the door to a range of opportunities, previously denied to us.

Two very different thought provoking Keynotes form our Vice Chancellor, Professor Martin Everett and Dr Angela Smallwood, a National Teaching Fellow and Director of the Centre of Excellence for integrative Learning at the University of Nottingham began and ended a very inspiring and enjoyable day.

Our thanks must go to Rosie Cook for her superb organisation of the day and as we are now working to publish the proceedings of our conference and to plan for next year, if you have any suggestions for Keynotes, formats or organisation, please forward them to Rosie at r.cook@uel.ac.uk

Professor McDonald brings marketing to the boardroom

Professor Malcolm McDonald (left) with Ian Bathgate from our Business School.

Visiting Lecturer Professor Malcolm McDonald gave an excellent master class on Bringing Marketing to the Boardroom earlier in July.

The theme of the lecture was to analyse the failure of the marketing community to sometimes get to grips with real added-value for shareholders, by not fully taking account of the time-value of money, the cost of capital and the potential risks within their marketing strategies.

Professor McDonald suggested this leads to inherent mistrust by senior executives to have a marketing professional on their board. This in turn results in lack of communication between the Board and the Marketing function leading senior management to think of marketing in terms of 'T-shirts and money off'.

The master class introduced a fully researched, tried and tested methodology for CEOs to assess quantitatively whether or not marketing plans will create or destroy added value for shareholders - holding marketers to account.

The event was well attended by current MBA and MSc Marketing students as well as MBA Alumni and staff. The lecture was informative and thought provoking and delivered in an interactive manner in professor McDonald's own inimitable style. A lively Q&A session took place after the lecture which progressed over lunch!

The Business School are planning more sessions in the new academic year.
