Nothing counts more than the first impression we give to our students, so this year our theme will be ‘Welcome to our Community’ with an emphasis on student friendly procedures, clear directions and joined up thinking.
All the key processes students have to go through will be for the first time in one place – the Trading Floor of the Business School.
The web will play a big part this year making it possible for students to enrol, order letters and apply for their discounted Oyster cards 24/7 and from anywhere in the world. Key dates for your diary are:

Our staff have achieved a double success at the National Teaching Fellowship awards this year. Congratulations to Julie Baldry Currens (pictured left), and Sharon Brown who have both been awarded National Teaching Fellowships by the Higher Education Academy.
Sharon Brown is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing and Technology. With a majority of her students entering studies with qualifications other than A-Levels, and a high number coming from overseas, Sharon has addressed these differences through her pioneering use of portfolio-based assessment, and using non-traditional ways to engage students within the Engineering/Surveying subject area.
Julie is Principal Lecturer in Physiotherapy in the School of Health & Bioscience, where she led the design and development of an accredited Situated Learning Programme in Physiotherapy. In her role as School Leader in Learning and Teaching Julie has led a number of cross-School initiatives, including the introduction of an activity-based Plagiarism Awareness week across the School and the establishment of a Learning and Teaching Research Group.
Julie and Sharon, who were among just 50 award winners chosen from 223 nominations submitted by higher education institutions across England and Northern Ireland, will each receive awards of £10,000 to support learning and teaching activities. Details will be published in the national press, including THES, this week.

Speaker: Michael Edwards, Professor of Planning, The Bartlett School, University College London
Discussant: Massimo De Angelis, from our Business School.
Professor Michael Edwards is an economist and planner working on property markets and their relationship with urban planning and development systems at UCL's Bartlett School of Planning. He has recently been active in critical debates on the London Plan and is joint chair of the King's Cross Railway Lands Group which has been active for 20 years in mediating conflicting pressures on the edge of central London.
The FOURTH ANNUAL DOCKLANDS LECTURE sets the context in which major development in the Thames Estuary is widely seen as a solution to many of the capital's region's problems.
Professor Edwards critically examines the interpretations of housing crisis offered by many current analysts and politicians including Gordon Brown.
Contrasting scenarios for the Thames Gateway are presented, and lessons are drawn from the history of urban development in the UK and internationally. The lecture draws on a chapter Professor Edwards has contributed to the forthcoming book, London's Turning: the Prospect of Thames Gateway, edited by Phil Cohen and Mike Rustin, London, Ashgate 2007.

Colleagues will be saddened to hear the news that Graham Brown, from the School of Computing and Technology, passed away on Tuesday 26 June, following a short illness.
Graham had taught Land Surveying with us for 35 years, having joined North East London Polytechnic in 1972 and in that time had served in almost all academic roles. Graham was a great friend and colleague to us all and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his wife Sharon.
Graham's Funeral will be held on Wednesday 4 July at 3.45pm at Forest Park Crematorium, Forest Road, Hainault, Essex, IG6 3HP, and will be followed by a short reception.
Graham's family has asked that there are no floral tributes, but instead will nominate a charity to which donations can be made if people so wish.
They would like Graham's Funeral to be open to as many as possible who wish to attend.
