Large scale artworks mounted in Docklands atrium

Gre Price of our Campus Communications Group with some of the artworks that are about to be installed in the Docklands atrium

The winners of our Campus Art competition in April are now getting to see their completed work exhibited as mounting is currently taking place, via a scaffold tower, in the Docklands atrium.

The site-specific works were judged winners partly due to their creative and technical excellence but also due to their aesthetic suitability for the light and space our Docklands atrium affords. Pete Cobb, Subject Director Fine Art and Digital arts and Visual communication, said: "The succesful proposals all responded positively to the demands of the site, resulting in works that acknowledge the scale and height of the installation while maintaining the integrity and craft of the artists' usual, smaller scale practice.'"

Judged by twice Turner prize nominee and visiting Professor, Richard Wilson, Fine Art lecturers Pete Cobb and Tim Allen and Director of Corporate Marketing and International Office, Sandra Hollis - the artworks are the first in what is to become our annual art competition.

The five artists are students: Hannah Wilson, Ingrid Anduson, Inderpreet Marwah, Sam Bridge and Tony Allen.

Love Art? Remember don't miss the AVA Showcase Private View Thursday 31 May 6-9pm in our AVA building.

The wider aim of the group is to support research and teaching on Olympics Studies between now and 2012, bringing together academics and PhD students from each of our Schools in a common endeavour of intellectual development , discussion and debate. There will be an opportunity in each meeting to share research information and ideas, and report on research in progress.

It is proposed that meetings would alternate between our Docklands and Stratford campuses and would take place at lunchtimes between 12 and 2.

There is a meeting to discuss the project, on Tuesday 29 May, at 12.30 pm in Room EB G.08, Docklands Campus.

If you are interested in taking part, contact Aygen Kurt Email: a.s.kurt@uel.ac.uk as soon as possible.

SSMCS Symposium: Women and Auto/Biography

CW from top: Professors Mica Nava, Maggie Humm, Liz Stanley and Reader in Sociology Maria Tamboukou

University of East London, Docklands Campus, Room EB.G8,
Friday 25 May 1.30-6 pm
Professors Maggie Humm (UEL) and Liz Stanley (Edinburgh University), with Reader in Sociology Maria Tamboukou (UEL), present their work on women and auto/biography, through engagements with fiction, autobiography, letters and other autobiographical texts, painting and photography. Discussant, UEL's Professor Mica Nava, will engage the speakers and symposium participants in thought-provoking debate by drawing out links, raising questions and helping to explore emerging themes.

Dr Corinne Squire explains: " This symposium gathers together leading scholars who work on the interplay between biography, autobiography, and lives - the ways that bioographies and autobiographies affect the lives of those who read them, and the ways in which we read such accounts through our own contemporary lives. The symposium brings together work across disciplines and across media, including art, photography, letters and fiction. Its specific address to women's lives, marks feminism's continuing intellectual and political significance in this area of work".

L-R National Mentoring Consortium Director Joe Greenland with Secretary and Registrar Alan Ingle with a number of our graduates who have taken part in the programme.

Diane Abbott MP, Manny Lewis, Chief Executive of the London Development Agency and UEL Governor Mike Brace OBE, presented awards to outstanding mentors and undergraduate students at the 2007 National Mentoring Consortium (NMC) Awards Ceremony held at Canary Wharf on last Wednesday.

Hundreds of students and professionals from around the UK, all participants in the NMC’s pioneering mentoring programmes for undergraduates from Black and Ethnic Minorities and students with disabilities, gathered at Lehman Brothers European Headquarters to share their experience and recognise excellence in mentoring.

The National Mentoring Consortium (NMC) provides support and encouragement to ethnic minority and disabled students interested in careers in government, law, business and related fields by arranging one-to-one mentoring relationships with executives in business and public sector organisations.

Riccardo Lambertini one of our final year students of International Business, was awarded Ethnic Minority Undergraduate Student mentee of the year. His mentor Hilda Ozymy of Shell International, encouraged Riccardo to take part in meetings at Shell, where he impressed senior executives. Syed Abidi receives outstanding achievement award

Mr Syed Abidi with Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Everett and some of our students from Pakistan.

Mr Syed Abidi, a leading light in Pakistan’s higher education field and Director of Falcon Consulting, was awarded a certificate of outstanding achievement by Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Everett at a special ceremony last Thursday at our Docklands Campus.

The award recognises the inspirational leadership Mr Abidi has provided both to education in Pakistan and in his unstinting partnership working with us over the past decade.

Currently, we have around 230 students from Pakistan and in the ten years that the university has worked with Mr Abidi over 1000 students from Pakistan have gone on to successfully complete their undergraduate and post-graduate studies.

Presenting Syed Abidi with his award, Professor Everett said: “Syed’s achievements have been remarkable. He has succeeded in inspiring young people from Pakistan to fulfil their academic and life goals. On behalf of our whole community, I offer our warmest congratulations for your outstanding service."

In his acceptance speech Syed Abidi said: “International student recruitment is vastly different in Pakistan now compared to when I first started Falcon. Today we have many of the biggest names in UK higher education approaching us. With improved administrative processes and your continued support and creativity we will continue in our excellent track record of recruiting and securing the success of Pakistani students.”

The ceremony also featured a reading by Urdu poet Shahnaz Rizwan, who graduated from our School of Education last year. Entitled Fireflies Shahnaz' poem describes how fireflies shine during the night but our natural talents are not like fireflies they shine both day and night. Shahnaz’ poem is dedicated to Joanne Kenworthy, from our School of Education, who inspired her writing.
