News in brief

Pathfinder: we did it!

E-Learning Manager, Dina VyortkinaUEL has been selected as a participant in the Higher Education Academy's (HEA) prestigious Pathfinder Programme from amongst twenty-eight other UK Higher Education and Further Education institutions.
The project, working name DEEP (Developing and Embedding E-Learning Practice: UEL Organisational Change), is led by our E-Learning Manager, Dina Vyortkina.

The aims of the project which are based on the findings from our recently completed Benchmarking of E-Learning survey, are to:

- initiate change and continuous improvement in our E-Learning culture, infrastructure and expertise that are grounded in data collected through the comprehensive and regular use of a suite of audit tools at all levels within the institution and with all stakeholders (in particular students, colleagues, partners and our local community).

- have a comprehensive E-Learning staff development portfolio of programmes and resources which are embedded into our Professional Standards Framework as accredited programmes and CPD  to provide knowledge and skills in E-Learning and to stimulate creativity, initiative and motivation.

- embed E-Learning into all policies and practices for curriculum design, development, delivery and evaluation.

- develop our internal and external communication strategies to support E-Learning implementation and our sustainable staff culture change.

Funded by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) with matched UEL funding the project began in May 2007 and concludes in May 2008.

Dina Vyortkina, our E-Learning Manager says: "I would like to thank once again all students and staff who participated in our Benchmarking of E-Learning exercise and provided great recommendations that were incorporated into our initial Pathfinder proposal."

East London Theatre Archive launched at Docklands library

Honorary graduate and former artistic director of the Hackney Empire Roland MuldoonLast Wednesday (2 May) around a hundred writers, performers, producers and academics joined Chancellor, Lord Rix, to celebrate the launch of the East London Theatre Archive (ELTA) digital archive project, and the bequest of the valuable Hackney Empire Archive, marking 25 years of New Variety and CAST, the pioneering theatre group established by Roland and Claire Muldoon.

Roland and Clare, who successfully re-opened the Hackney Empire in 1986 and recently restored it after raising £15 million, were among the guests at the launch, along with celebrated performance poet John Hegley, actor Murray Melvin and stand-up comedians Matt Devereaux and Andrew Bailey.

The event marks the launch of the East London Theatre Archive Digitisation project. The Funding Council’s Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) has awarded us over half a million pounds to create the East London Theatre Archive over two years. This will create a unique digital resource of some 15,000 endangered artefacts and collections from the rich resources held by a number of theatres and theatre bodies in East London that have made a significant contribution to the development of theatre studies and the performing arts.

Prof Andrew McDonald, Director of Library and Learning Services at UEL, said: “It’s a huge privilege to have been selected to lead the development of the East London Theatre Archive, which will preserve unique endangered collections and make them accessible to a wide academic audience.

“The final outcome will be a digitised collection, full of rich potential for students and researchers across the country. We are very confident that the archive will become a resource of national and international significance, and will ensure that this vital part of our shared heritage becomes accessible to all.”

NSS - We made it ! 54% of final year students complete survey

NSS Stand at Employability Works fairOur final year students kept us guessing almost right up until to the close of poll as to whether or not we would achieve the required 50% of completions for the National Student Survey.

IPSOS, the market research company carrying out the survey, published our results each Wednesday afternoon from January to April. It was only the Wednesday before the survey's deadline date (Monday 30 April) that we could be sure we had achieved our desired result (52.39%). Our final result was 54.18%.

The National Student Survey working party, Ruth Carter, Joyce Okello, Patrick Wilson and Karen O'Connor would like thank our colleagues in Schools and Services who prioritised this work and enabled us all to achieve this successful result.

This is the first year in which the results will be published on the UCAS website, first port of call for many potential undergraduates and these results also feed into the rankings produced by The Times and The Guardian league tables.

Look up and enjoy Bird

Klara Jaya Brekke and Lindsay Segall's BirdWalk along the bridge (referred to by some as the Bridge of Sighs) connecting our Knowledge Dock building and the Business School and you'll find Bird, a huge wooden winged creature funded by our recently established Campus Communications Group.

The wooden is visible silhouetted against the sky from ground level.

The Campus Communications group was established to bring a brighter visual identity to our campuses. Large scale artworks will go on display in the Atrium this month and Bird is one of five smaller projects the group is funding.

Bird was created by fine art students Klara Jaya Brekke and Lindsay Segall.

What’s Happening

Comparative Legal Systems presents, speaker: Nick Yarris, Death row survivor and Reprieve spokesperson

Reprieve website banner

Wednesday 9 May 12.30-2pm Duncan House main lecture theatre Room DH001 Stratford High Street, E15 2JB

Reprieve is a UK charity that fights for the lives of people facing the death penalty and other human rights violations.
Reprieve focuses on the cases of the innocent, people who are mentally ill or learning disabled, women, racial and ethnic minorities, all those unjustly on death row and those detained out of reach of the law in the 'war on terror'.
Through investigations, legal representation, campaigns and education, Reprieve targets issues and cases where we can make a difference for people on death row. Reprieve fights for those on death row who cannot afford a lawyer to defend them and fights to change the legal systems that - casually and systematically - allow fatal miscarriages of justice.

Nick Yarris spent 23 years on death row before he was exonerated by DNA evidence. He is an excellent speaker, and can put a human face on the death penalty in the USA.
