Mayfest 07 – our free arts and cultural festival!

Celebrate Mayfest 2007

Wednesday 2 May - 12 - 8 pm

Celebrate the joys of spring tomorrow at Mayfest 07, featuring free performances and fresh artistic productions on the waterfront of our Docklands campus.

An exciting programme of events includes an art fair, exhibitions, music, dance, poetry and theatrical performances, bringing together the work of professionals, students, school and community groups in a celebration of culture and creativity.

While there may be some disruption and noise to your normal working day we trust that you'll not only understand but also enjoy the events taking place at Mayfest.

Although our Facilities colleagues have a continual work programme of maintenance we ask everyone to adopt the DON’T WALK PAST POLICY! 

If you see or have a problem, please report it on Ext: 2000.

Ian Bruce and Kelly Donno of our Facilities helpdesk are available from 0900 to 1700.

You can report faults to the helpdesk team on a voice message system outside of office hours.   If the problem too urgent to wait then inform our 24-hour Security on Ext: 7771, and they will contact an appropriate emergency contractor.

New Alumni Network 'Trace a classmate service'

Our Alumni Network has recently introduced our Trace a classmate service to put long lost classmates and colleagues in touch with one another.  

We have a trace a classmate request that some staff members may be able to help with...   Do you remember Christopher Dawson, former Head of Sculpture at NELP?  If you know where he may be working now or how to contact him, please get in touch with our Alumni Officer Emma Cale as his family members are trying to trace him.

Time Out…

News from our multifaith Chaplaincy

This semester the UEL Chaplaincy is holding weekly meetings with a focus on the issue of landmines - awareness-raising about this very serious problem, its implications, and work being done to address it, discussion of practical and ethical issues relating to conflict, security and the arms industry, projects for peace, wider thinking on the meaning of peace in relation to justice ... Throughout the term we shall be fundraising for the charity MAG (Mines Advisory Group - www.mag.org.uk). Tim Carstairs, MAG's Director of Policy, will be coming to speak on Tuesday 8th May. All are welcome, 12.30  - 2 p.m. every Tuesday at Stratford (Chaplaincy Centre, room 032 - in the basement by the main entrance) and every Thursday at Docklands (room EBG07).

Dragon Boat Festival in Docklands - Sunday 20 May

Following last week's call for oarsome paddlers we've had the following volunteers: Martin Chan, Patrick Wilson, Dina Bavisi, Mike Raddie, Paul Dwight-Moore, James Shillito, Hussain Allee, Bernie Englefield, Richard Keenan, Michael Riches, Martin Longstaff, Chris Anderson, Uhuru Socha, Dan Brooks ...................

Practice sessions are planned for Thursday evenings 10 and 17 May at the London Regatta Centre.

Donald Hoskins conducts Holiday Classics

Dr Donald Hoskins

Monday 28 May 2007, 7.30pm.

Honorary Graudate and former Head of Music Dr Donald Hoskins MBE is conducting the Aminta Concert Orchestra performing a special 'holiday classics' at the Southbank Centre later this month.

The programme is a 75th birthday tribute to Dr Hoskins who is an accomplished conductor and musician. Over the years, the Orchestra has performed with many renowned artists and choirs, and for this special tribute it performs a popular programme of musical favourites.

What's Happened

Sri Lankan new year cultural event!

Her Excellency Kshenuka Senewiratne with Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Everett

Our  Sri Lankan Society, in collaboration with our International Office,  hosted the True Taste of Sri Lanka, last Wednesday, to commemorate  the annual Sri Lankan Sinhala-Tamil New Year  Festival. 

The event was attended by the Sri Lankan High Commissioner, Her Excellency Kshenuka Senewiratne accompanied by Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Everett, Head of International Office Adrienne Clarke, Head of School for Computing and Technology Paul Smith and Professor Chitral Wijeyesekera.

The event began by lighting the 'Traditional Oil Lamp' followed by  dance performances, traditional Sri Lankan games and the chance to try authentic Sri Lankan cuisine as well as other international dishes.
