This week we launched our new campus Art competition initiated by our recently established Campus Communications Group. The competition this academic year is to encourage the production of site-specific artworks for the blank walls on the north side of the atrium in the East Building of our Docklands Campus.
There are five wall spaces available, each approximately 7 metres by 5 metres, at a height of 5 metres above ground. Work will be considered in any medium, including painting, print, photography, sculpture and so on. Proposals should demonstrate sensitivity to the nature and scale of the site, and careful thought must be given to the health and safety implications of the work when installed.
A selection committee will consider proposals, and successful artists will have access to a budget of up to £500 to facilitate production and installation of each artwork. The works will remain the property of the artists, but are expected to be installed for up to 2 years. The selection committee will include Richard Wilson, the installation artist and an AVA Visiting Professor, Director of Corporate Marketing and International Office Sandra Hollis and colleagues from AVA and at least one other school, and from Facilities.
Staff and students are able to submit proposals
with 3 low resolution JPEG images of previous work, and up to three JPEG images of preparatory work for the work proposed. The closing date for entries to be returned is Friday 23 March. Selected artists will be informed by Wednesday 4 April, and work that is ready in time will be installed for Mayfest (2 May 2). In any event work should be ready for installation by Monday May 14th. A Private View will be provided to mark the occasion. for more information and an application form contact Karen O'Connor Email: infocus@uel.ac.uk

A retrospective of the work of celebrated film artist and Fine Art Professor John Smith has gone on show at tank.tv, a major online gallery of moving images.
John Smith is one of the most important British film and video artists of his generation. Since 1972, he has made over thirty film, video and installation works, many of which have been commissioned by The Arts Council of England, BBC2 and Channel Four Television.
Full length showings of four of his films, and excerpts from nine others, will be available to view at www.tank.tv until 15 April.
John Smith's films have previously been shown in cinemas, art galleries and on television throughout the world. They have been screened at over a hundred international film festivals and awarded major prizes in Hamburg, Leipzig, Oberhausen, Cork, Palermo, Graz, Uppsala, Bangkok and Chicago.
Professor Smith has been a tutor on the BA Fine Art course at UEL since 1979 and has also lectured on many other Fine Art courses around the country. His PhD was undertaken at UEL in 1998.
Two international Civil Engineering students are celebrating after successfully completing their PhDs - fourteen years after having first met at the here! Supry Ladi, of Brunei, and Idrus Masirin, of Malaysia, became friends when they both studied for an MSc in Civil Engineering in 1993. Under the supervision of Professor DC Wijeyesekera, a leading expert in the field of pipeline technology, they returned to to begin PhD projects in 2001.
Supry, whose project examined the causes of road accidents in Brunei and possible ways to increase safety, is now setting up a Road Traffic Accident Research Centre in collaboration with the Brunei police and land survey department. In 2004, he almost quit the PhD after his young son was badly injured in a car crash.
Supry said: “I was distressed and seriously thought about giving up, but DC convinced me to keep going. I’m so glad to think that I can now go on to help ensure that less road accidents happen in the future.
“I actually did my degree in Civil Engineering at the North East London Polytechnic in 1986-89, so I’ve been studying at UEL since even before it became a university. That loyalty’s been paid back greatly with success in my career, and, considering I also met my wife here, I’ve definitely got a lot to thank UEL for.”
Idrus, a lecturer at the University of Tun Hussein Onn in Malaysia, moved with his family to Manor Park while conducting research into the possibility of improving the lifespan and safety of pavements on rural roads. Idrus said: “Being awarded our PhDs means so much to Supry and I. We’ve been through a lot together and, thanks to the support of everyone here, and DC in particular, we can now look forward to disseminating our knowledge, experience and expertise as academics.
Professor DC Wijeyesekera, who has lectured and researched at our School of Computing and Technology for over twenty years, said: “Idrus and Supry have been excellent students and shown a great deal of commitment. What’s particularly rewarding is that their projects were very country-specific, which means they can now go on to make a real difference back home.”

Fashion Design student Katie Whiting is sparkling with success after winning a prestigious sponsorship deal from Swarovski, the world’s leading brand for precision-cut crystal. Katie was one of only five up-and-coming designers selected from hundreds of applicants for the sponsorship. CRYSTALLIZED™ Swarovski elements will now be included in Katie's designs for her final collection, which could be selected for catwalk presentation at Graduate Fashion Week in June.
Katie said: "I'm so excited about this opportunity - it was such an amazing surprise to be selected! I fell in love with crystals when I was doing work experience with Julian Macdonald, so it's wonderful to have the chance to work with them for my most important collection. Helen Carter, Programme Leader in Fashion Design at UEL’s School of Arts and Digital Industries, said: “Katie's dedication and passion for her subject is inspiring – she really deserved to be selected for this prestigious support from Swarovski.”
